Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started
What is CaseChat?

CaseChat is an AI-powered legal research platform that helps Australian lawyers and law students get legal answers linked to Australian case law and legislation, minimising hallucinated cases.

Who is CaseChat designed for?

CaseChat is designed for Australian solicitors, barristers, law students, and legal researchers.

How does the AI work?

Users can ask the AI legal research questions. The AI searches our database of Australian law to generate answers grounded in legal sources, which you can easily verify by going to the original case law or legislation.

What features does CaseChat offer?

CaseChat offers AI legal research, case and legislation search, legal document analysis, case summaries, citation support, document uploads, document downloads, prompt optimisation, and research history.

Can I still view the original case or legislation?

Yes. CaseChat provides citations to the authorities referenced in AI-generated answers, allowing you to access and verify the original legal sources.

Do I need to pay to access the original cases or legislation?

No. All original legal materials referenced by CaseChat are publicly available free of charge. The value CaseChat adds is AI-generated answers that cite relevant legal authorities to support your legal research.

Plans & Billing
Is CaseChat free?

CaseChat offers a Free plan that lets you explore the platform with specific usage allowances and feature access. It also offers paid plans designed for lawyers and law students who want more use and features.

What do paid subscriptions include?

Paid plans include higher usage and more features. Please see the comparison table on the pricing page for more details.

Can I try CaseChat before subscribing?

Yes. CaseChat was designed to let you see how many of the features work before subscribing. You can access CaseChat for free before deciding whether to subscribe to a paid plan.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept major credit and debit cards through our payment provider, Stripe.

How do I upgrade my subscription?

You can upgrade from the Free plan to a paid plan by clicking the start option of your preferred plan. We don't yet support changing from a law student to a lawyer plan, or switching between monthly, quarterly, and annual cycles, but a plan-upgrade feature is planned. For now, let your current plan expire, then choose the new plan you want.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel auto-renewal at any time from your user dashboard under the subscription section. Otherwise, subscriptions renew automatically based on your chosen billing cycle. If you cancel, your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period and won't renew after that, at which point you lose access to the plan features.

What is your refund policy?

Subscriptions and payments made to CaseChat are generally non-refundable, except where required under Australian consumer law. Due to the nature of digital services, we generally do not provide refunds, credits, or exchanges for unused subscriptions.

How will CaseChat improve in the future?

We update the website every few weeks. Our top priority right now is making sure the AI grounds its answers in verifiable sections of the text rather than just the case itself — for example, not just citing Mabo, but grounding it in paragraph [2] of Mabo. The AI already does this, but we want to polish it further, as we feel it's a huge help to lawyers. We have a robust roadmap of other features, such as improved citations and a hierarchy of laws, but reliable pinpoint AI answers are the current priority.

Usage & Limits
What counts as an AI Research Prompt?

An AI Research Prompt is any message submitted to CaseChat's AI, including (but not limited to) legal research questions, requests for summaries, case analysis, legal concept explanations, and document-based queries.

Are AI Research Prompts transferable between accounts?

No. AI Research Prompts are allocated to the account associated with the subscription and cannot be transferred, shared, sold, or reassigned to another account.

What counts as a document upload?

A document upload is any file submitted to CaseChat for AI analysis. Current fair-usage limits allow files up to 30 MB and a maximum of 100 pages per upload. Each uploaded file counts as one (1) document upload.

What counts as a document download?

A document download occurs when you download the full text of a legal document in PDF or Microsoft Word format. Each file downloaded counts as one (1) document download and is deducted from your plan allowance.

Do unused prompts, uploads, and downloads carry over when my plan renews?

No. All allowances operate on a "use it or lose it" basis. Unused AI Research Prompts, document uploads, and document downloads do not roll over to the next billing cycle and reset at the start of each renewal period. If you anticipate heavier usage during certain months, an annual plan may offer better value and flexibility, as it lets you pool your usage limits over the period.

What else should I know about use of the website?

All use of the website is subject to the Terms of Service, which can be found in the footer of every page.

Privacy & Legal
Is my data secure?

Yes. We take privacy and security seriously and employ various industry-standard security measures. User data and uploaded documents are handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable laws.

Is CaseChat legal advice?

No. CaseChat is a legal research tool and does not provide legal advice. AI-generated responses are intended to assist with legal research and should not replace professional legal consultation. Users should independently verify all outputs and seek qualified legal advice where appropriate.

Can I use CaseChat for client work?

Yes. Legal professionals may use CaseChat to assist with legal research and document review. However, all outputs should be independently reviewed and verified before being relied upon in professional practice. Please also make sure you do not input confidential information belonging to third parties into the platform.

How is CaseChat different from general-purpose AI tools?

CaseChat is purpose-built for legal research. Unlike general-purpose AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude, CaseChat focuses on Australian legal authorities, citations, case law, legislation, and legal research workflows to provide more relevant and reliable research assistance.
