"YTTHEREAS, pursuant to the “ Public "Works Act of 1888,” a Preamble.
certain sei’ies of proposed Public Works, namely, “ Drainage of the Western Suhurhs of the city of Sydney,” was, on the twenty-third day of July, in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight, duly submitted and explained by the Secretary for Puhlic AVorks in the Legislative Assemhly, and such series was thereupon, on the motion of the said Minister, referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public AÂ orks, which Committee reported thereon to the said Assemhly in the following terms, namely :—“ That the Committee consider it expediimt that the proposed Drainage AVorks for the APestern Suhurhs as suhinittcd to them by the Legislative Assemhly be carided out to the extent of the amount belori' tlu' Committee, viz., eight hundred and thirty thousand three hundred and four pounds” ; And whereas, on the tAventy-fourth day of Sejitemher, in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty-nine, the said Assembiy by resolution declared “ That in view of the rc])ort on the subject from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on I’ulilic; AVorks it is expc'dient that the Avork of constructing a system of ScAverage for tlio AVestern Suburbs of the city of Sydney slioidd he carried out at a total estimated cost of Eight hundred and thirty thousand three hundred and four pounds.” And the said resolution Avas notified in the Gazette on the tAventy-lifth day of Sejitember in the said year. And Avhereas, pursuant to the said Act, it has become the duty of the Minister to introduce a Bill into the said Assembly to sanction the carrying out of such Avork as aforesaid : Be it therefore enaeded by the Queen’s Alost Excellent Alajesty, by and Avith the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly of Koav South AVales in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same as folloAVs :—

1. This Act may he cited as the “ AVestern Suburbs of Sydney sh o rt title.
Drainage Act of 1889,” and shall be read AA'ith the “ Tublic AVorks
Act of 1888.”
2. The series of Public AA'orks for the drainage of the AÂ estern AA'orktohe canied
Suburbs of Sydney, more particularly described in the Schedule to this Act, shall he carried out by the Secretary for Puhlic AA'orks, or the Member of the Executive Council for the time being charged AA’ith the duties of the said Ministc'r. And such klinistcr or Member shall, for the purposes of this Act and the “ Puhlic AÂ orks Act of 1888,” he deemed and taken to be the “ Constructing Authority” authorized to enter into contracts and to exercise all ])OAvers, do all acts and things, and be resjionsible in respect of all obligations and liabilities Avhich can be done or incurred by a “ Coustructing Authority” under or pursuant to this Act, or the said Public AVorks Act, so far as may be necessary for the carrying out of the Avorks hereby sanctioned. On completion of any part or parts of the said series of works, the same may, by notification in the Gazette by the Governor, be transferred to and vested in the Authority in which the works for the Water Supply and Sewerage of the City of Sydney and its suburbs arc by law vested. |
SCHEDULE.
Western Suburbs o f Sydney Drainaye Works.
Eon sewerage of tbo parishes of Alexandria, Petersham, Concord, boroughs of Alexandria, Ashfiold, Balmain, Burwood, Camperdown, Darlington, Glebe, Maedonald- town, Marrickville, ISTewtown, Petersham, llcdf'ern, Waterloo, and munici])al districts of Canterbury, Five Dock, Leichhardt, St. Peters, and Strathfield, county of Cumberland.
(1.) The construction of a main intercepting sewer and branches from Newtown Eoad and George-street West through the Glebe, Leichhardt, and Balmain for the area coloured purple on plan.
(2.) An extension of the Prince Alfred Hospital sewer through Camperdown to
Liberty-street, Petersham.
(3.) A main intercepting sewer and branches from the southern outfall sewer at Alexandria, through Macdonaldtow'n to Wilson-strcet, Newtown, for the area coloured green on plan.
(4.) An outfall sewer for the western branch sewers from the outfall at Webb’s
Grant to Marrickville, a distance of 2 miles 380 yards.
(5.) An eastern intercepting sew'cr and branches from Marrickville to Leichhardt for the drainage of parts of Marrickville, St. Peters, Newtown, Macdonaldtown, Alexandria, Petersham, Leichhardt, and Camperdown, as coloured yellow on plan. This includes a low-level system for Marrickville valley and St. Peters.
(6.) A northern intercepting sewer and branches for the western parts of Marrick
ville, Petersham, and Leichhardt, as shown in rod colour on the plan.
(7.) A western intercepting sewer and branches from Marrickville and Strathfield for the drainage of Burwmod and parts of Ashfield, Five Dock, Concord, and Strathfield, as shown by blue colour on the plan.
((?) The works above specified include the resumption of all nece.ssary lands for outfall works and access thereto, and for the construction of embankments, filtration areas, screening-chambers, tanks, culverts, drains, storm-water overflows, and effluent outfall, together with the erection of buildings, shafts, machinery, and all necessary appliances.
(b) The said w'orks are subject to such deviations and modifications of route, and such alterations, omissions, or extensions as may hereafter be deemed necessary by the Governor, provided that the total cost as limited by section three of this Act be not exceeded.
