AN ACT to amend the Weights and Measures Act,
1915-1958.
[Assented to 14th December, 1964.]
BE it enacted by the Queen's Most ExcellentMajesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the, authority of the same, as follows:—

A reference in a law of the State (whether that law was made before or is made after the commencement of the Weights and Measures Act Amendment Act, 1964) to a unit of measurement of a physical quantity shall, if there is a Commonwealth legal unit of measurement of that physical quantity of the same name, be read and construed as a reference to that Commonwealth legal unit of measurement. . |

| (a) | by adding after the interpretation, "Coal", the following interpretation |
"Commission" means the National Standards Commission continued in existence by the Commonwealth Act. ;
| (b) | by substituting for the figures, "1948" in line two of the interpretation, "Common- wealth Act", the figures, "1960"; |
| (c) | by adding after the interpretation, "Commonwealth Act", the f ollowing interpretation |
"Commonwealth legal unit of measure- ment" means a unit of measurement prescribed by or under the Commonwealth Act. ; and
| (d) | by adding after the interpretation, "Driver", the following interpretation |
"Drug" means any substance, organic or
inorganic, used as medicine or in
the composition or preparation of

medicines, whether for external or internal use; and includes absorbent cotton wool, surgical dressings, and therapeutic substances.

| 5. Section nine of the principal Act is amended | amended. |
| (a) | by inserting immediately after the section number, "9." in line one, the subsection designation, "(1)"; |
| (b) | by inserting after the word, "in" in line three, the passage, "Part I of"; and |
(c) by adding the following subsections
(2) Specimens of weights according to the metric system of measurement of mass, as described in Part II of Schedule A, that have been provided by the Commission and deposited at the Treasury in accordance with the provisions of paragraph (a) of section eight B of this Act are, subject to this Act, standard weights of Western Australia.
(3) The measures of capacity according to the metric system as described in Part III of Schedule A are, subject to this Act, standard measures of Western Australia in relation to the sale of drugs. .

PART I.—IMPERIAL SYSTEM. ; and
| (b) | by adding at the end of the Schedule, the following part |
PART II.—METRIC SYSTEM.
Measures of Weight.
The standard kilogramme shall be the unit of standard measure of metric weight from which all other metric weights and all measures having reference to metric weight shall be ascertained.
One thousand such kilogrammes shall be a tonne; and one hundred such kilogrammes shall be a quintal.
One-tenth part of such kilogramme shall be a hectogramme; one-hundredth part of such kilogramme shall be a dekagramme, and one-thousandth part of such kilogramme shall be a gramme.
One-tenth part of such gramme shall be a decigramme; one hundredth part of such gramme shall be a centigramme; and one- thousandth part of such gramme shall be a milligramme.
Measures of Capacity.
The standard litre shall be the unit or standard measure of the metric system of capacity.
One thousand such litres shall be a kilolitre; one hundred such litres shall be a hectolitre; and ten such litres shall be a dekalitre.
One-tenth part of such litre shall be a decilitre; one-hundredth part of such litre shall be a centilitre; one-thousandth part of such litre shall be a millilitre; and one-millionth part of such litre shall be a microlitre. .
