The Australian Capital Territory Executive makes the following Regulations under the Weapons Act 1991.

Commencement

1.  These Regulations commence on the day on which they are notified in the Gazette.

Principal Regulations

2.  In these Regulations, “Principal Regulations” means the Weapons Regulations.

Interpretation

3.  Regulation 3 of the Principal Regulations is amended by inserting the following definition:

“ ‘catapult’ means a device designed for use with, or a component part of which is, a brace that fits or rests on the forearm or on another part of the body of the user and supports the wrist against the tension of elastic material used to project a projectile;”.

Insertion

4.  After regulation 9 of the Principal Regulations the following regulation is inserted:

Exemption—catapults

“9A. (1) A research body that manufactures, acquires or has a catapult in its possession is exempt from section 16 of the Act if the catapult—

(a)is manufactured, acquired or in its possession for use in plant or animal research;

(b)is kept in accordance with the guidelines in force under section 13; and

(c)bears a serial number allocated by the Registrar.

“(2) A person who is employed or engaged by a research body is exempt from section 16 of the Act if, for the purposes of that employment or engagement, the person possesses a catapult manufactured, acquired or in the possession of that body.

“(3)  In this regulation—

‘research body’ means the Australian National University or the University of Canberra.”.
