Officers Commanding Troops. —£575 per annum irrespective of rank and inclusive of all allowances.
Adjutants and Quartermasters. —Captain, £400 per annum Lieutenant, £350 per annum, inclusive of all allowances.
Veterinary Officers. —£500 per annum, inclusive of all allowances.
Chaplains. —£1 2s. 6d. per diem, inclusive of all allowances except field allowance, which is provided for under Regulation 17
Pay at a daily rate of half the rate of pay of their rank shall accrue for all patients who are unfit for duty.
Payat the full daily rate of pay of their rank shall accrue for patients when they are reported by the Senior Medical Officer as fit for duty in the Isolation Camp, and provided that the report of the Officer Commanding the Camp regarding each is good and shows that the man has worked well.
No payment in excess of 1s. per day shall be made to any patient until he is returned to Training Camp cured and fit for duty there.
No payment in excess of 1s. per day shall be made to or shall accrue for patients who are guilty of concealment of Venereal Disease.
Members contracting Venereal Disease a second time shall not receive any pay during treatment, nor shall any amount accrue to their credit during such period.
All the privileges granted by this regulation are subject to good behaviour and obedience to orders by patients, and are liable to forfeiture for disobedience or misconduct.
Separation Allowance shall also be payable to dependents of Venereal patients in accordance with Regulation 38.
PART II.
Allowances.

Officers holding the undermentioned appointments shall be paid Field Allowance at the rate of 5s. per diem, provided their rank does not entitle them to a higher rate:—

a ) Brigade Major.(
b ) Staff Captains on Brigade Staffs.(
c ) Aides-de-Camp and Orderly Officers to Brigade and Higher Commanders.(
d ) Officers of Divisional Head-Quarters.(
e ) Adjutant.
In the case of Australian Nurses and Masseuses abroad attached to and performing duty at non-Australian Hospitals, the, full charge for messing will be met from the Commonwealth funds, in lieu of the payment of 2s. 6d. per diem.
Field Allowance for Nurses and Masseuses is not issuable under any circumstances.
Officers on appointment may provide themselves privately with breeches, greatcoats, and jackets, in lieu of receiving the ordinary free issue, and may be refunded the actual cost of such articles, provided the amounts claimed do not in any instance exceed the price of such article as published in Military Orders.
Officers serving abroad may after the completion of every twelve months’ service in the Australian Imperial Force, be granted a sum of £5 towards the expense of maintaining their equipment and clothing. &c.

Provided however that the subsistence allowance for Privates in France shall be 4s. per diem.
In cases where members of the Australian Imperial Force are in receipt of Subsistence Allowance they may continue to receive such allowance in addition to Travelling Allowance of rank for a period not exceeding fourteen days when travelling on duty in Egypt, and for a period not exceeding seven days when travelling on duty in Great Britain.
PART III.
Extra Duty Pay.

1 Sergeant for every complete 30;
1 Corporal for every complete 20.
They shall continue to receive pay as privates, and shall be granted extra duty pay in addition whilst performing such duties, according to the following scale:—

The acting appointment and all allowances in respect of same shall terminate immediately drafts reach and are absorbed into units, or on the soldier’s services in the capacity of acting non-commissioned officer being no longer required, whichever is the earlier.
(i) Ship’s Sergeant-Major.
(ii) Ship’s Quartermaster-Sergeant.
They shall continue to receive pay as Privates and will be granted Extra Duty Pay in addition whilst performing such duties at the following rates:—
Ship’s Sergeant-Major, 6s. per diem.
Ship’s Quartermaster-Sergeant, 5s. 6d per diem.
The acting appointment and all allowances in respect of same will terminate immediately drafts have disembarked, or on the soldier’s services in the capacity of acting non-commissioned officer being nolonger required, whichever is the earlier.

1 Corporal for every complete 25 rank and file.
Such non-commissioned officers shall receive Extra Duty Pay at the rate of the difference between the rate of pay of their substantive rank and the rate for the acting rank held by them, and the acting appointments and all allowances in respect of same will terminate on date of disembarkation in Australia, or on the soldier’s services in the capacity of acting non-commissioned officer being no longer required, whichever is the earlier.

and extra duty pay as under will accrue to their credit whilst they are performing the duties of non-commissioned officers and are actually retained in the Venereal Isolation Camp until fit for discharge therefrom:—
Acting Corporals, 2s. per diem, in addition to Private’s pay.
Acting Sergeants, 3s. per diem, in addition to Private’s pay.
PART IV.
Allotments and Separation Allowance.
(
a ) For wife living at home,* 1s. 5d. per diem.
(

* Note.—“Living at home” is intended to mean living at the home maintained in Australia or New Zealand by the husband for his wife and children irrespective of the locality where it may be necessary for the husband to reside.
A similar allowance as in (
Mother;
Married sister, who is a widow;
Invalid father, whose wife is not alive.
Similarly the allowance prescribed
in (
Brothers and sisters under the age of 16 years;
Children under 16years of age of a married sister who is a widow and of whom the member is the sole support;
Children under 16years of age of a member who, after a legal or mutual separation has been entered into, continues to maintain them by allotting a portion of his military pay for such purpose.
Separation Allowance may be issued
on account of a member of the Australian Imperial Force to a woman who stands
in the same relationship as a wife to the soldier concerned, provided that the
woman has been entirely dependent upon the soldier for her maintenance and
would otherwise be destitute, and provided further that the statutory allotment
required of married soldiers is made in her favour. In such cases proof will be
required that the soldier was living with the woman to whom the payment is to
be made on a
Separation Allowance may also be issued in respect of children of the soldier concerned who are in the charge of such women.
Separation Allowance may be issued in respect of adopted children of members of the Australian Imperial Force, provided the District Paymaster concerned satisfies himself by sight of Deed of Adoption or other proof of the actual adoption.
Separation Allowance at the rate prescribed for the dependant concerned may be paid in cases in which an order of a Court has been made for maintenance, and also in any other case upon the approval of the Minister.
Separation Allowance in all the foregoing cases is subject to the limitation that the amount thereof, added to the member’s pay (including, after embarkation, deferred pay), shall not in any case exceed 10s. per diem.

If at any time during the first two months the soldier is definitely ascertained to be dead, the allotment of pay and separation allowance to a dependant shall be continued until the expiry of two months from thedate of notification of death or until a War Pension is payable which ever first occurs, but in the case of an allotment which is not payable to a dependant, payment of same shall cease on the expiry of two months from the date of notification that the soldier was “missing.”
Separation Allowance shall also be continued under the same conditions as allotments of pay.
37 (1) Notwithstanding the
provisions of regulation 13 regarding the whole of the daily rate of pay being
forfeited, any allotment made by a soldier to
(2) In addition, Separation Allowance will continue to be paid to allottees who are already in receipt of same, and will also be paid to allottees of non-commissioned officers who are undergoing stoppage of pay, provided that such allottee would have been eligible to receive Separation Allowance had the soldier been in receipt of less than 10s. per diem. In no case will Separation Allowance be issued in excess of 2s. per diem.
(3) No payment, under this instruction will exceed the amount originally payable to allottees.
(4) Provided also that in the event of the death of the member concerned whilst on active service, no stoppage on this account will be made from next-of-kin or beneficiaries under the member’s will when settlement of the deceased soldier’s account takes place, nor from the soldier should be become permanently disabled from causes other than misconduct whilst on active service.
(5) In any case in which a sentence by Court Martial includes dismissal or discharge from the Force, all payments on account of the soldier, whether to dependants, or otherwise, shall cease as from the date of award of the Court.
(6) Any sums paid to dependants under this regulation will be deducted from any amount standing to the credit of the soldier, except as provided in paragraph 4, and should there be a debit balance against
his account on the expiry of the period of forfeiture the reduced allotment and Separation Allowance shall be continued until the debit is liquidated, the soldier being allowed an amount of 6d. per day after the forfeiture has expired.
Allotments and Separation Allowance shall be continued to dependants at the rates prescribed in regulation 37 during the period that the patient is unfit for duty in the Isolation Camp, and such rates shall still be continued on the patient being reported by the Senior Medical Officer as fit for duty, until any debit brought about by the payment of allotment and separation allowance during period of unfitness for duty has been liquidated. If, after the soldier’s discharge from the Isolation Camp a debit balance still remains, payment of the allotment will continue at the reduced rate, and the soldier be allowed an amount of 6d. per diem until the debit has been cleared.
The full rate of allotment and Separation Allowance shall be continued except in cases where the provisions of the previous paragraph apply in regard to a prior period of unfitness for duty.
Allotments and Separation Allowance shall be continued to dependants at the rates prescribed in regulation 37 during the whole period of the patient’s treatment.
Provided that they are not guilty of concealment of venereal disease, nor have contracted venereal disease a second time, patients with dependants shall be credited with half the rate of Separation Allowance when unfit for duty and the full rate of Separation Allowance when fit for duty, in addition to the similar rates of pay authorized by regulation 14.
Allotments and Separation Allowance continued under this regulation shall be a first charge against any sums in excess of 1s. per diem earned by patients whilst in Isolation Camp, and thereafter against any sum earned in excess of 6d. per diem.
PART V.
Medical.
The period for which payment will be made shall be from the date of embarkation of troops till date of disembarkation, and in cases where troops are embarked or disembarked at more than one port, the date of
embarkation will be that on which troops first embarked, and the date of disembarkation that on which disembarkation was completed. In the event of any Assistant Medical Officer joining a transport at a port other than the first port of embarkation, he shall receive payment from date of joining only.
Claims shall in all cases be supported by a certificate given by the Officer Commanding Troops, showing the name of Transport, date and port of embarkation of troops, and date and port of disembarkation of troops.
PART VI
Leave.
When the earning capacity of a member in his civil capacity is not affected, military pay shall cease, and discharge take effect fourteen days after confirmation by the Principal Medical Officer of the recommendation for discharge.
Men who have already been discharged from the Forces for malaria contracted on active service, may, whilst undergoing a course of treatment at the Townsville Tropical Institute, be paid at the rate received by them at date of discharge for a period not exceeding three months.
PART VII.
Travelling.
In either of the above-mentioned cases in which warrants are granted they may be issued to any other place within the Commonwealth, provided that the cost of transport to the latter does not exceed the cost of return to the place of enlistment.
PART VIII.
Funerals.
The amounts are to be paid by the Master of the vessel, and reclaimed by the owners, who should produce receipted vouchers countersigned by the Commanding Officer of troops on board.

Miscellaneous.

Articles for which a cash allowance has been paid will become the property of the Commonwealth and will be accounted for as laid down in M.O. 239/1916.
PART X.
PaY.
The foregoing will not apply to members of the Permanent Forces who will resume duty in their units with the rank they held prior to appointment to the Australian Imperial Force.
(1)
Officers Holding Special Appointments.— At the rates specified in terms of appointment.(2)
Officers of the District Standing Medical Board. —At the daily rate prescribed for their ranks in F. and A. Regulation 340 for each sitting. A sitting for which full rate of pay will be paid, shall be for not less than four cases, and not more than one sitting shall be paid for, for any one day.
Sittings for less than four cases shall be paid for at half rates.

All Other Officers of A.A.M.C. and Dental Reserve.— Atthe daily rate prescribed for their ranks in F. and A. Regulation 340. If they are employed for less than three hours in any one day, half rates shall be payable, provided that the regular visit to his wards by a Medical Officer of a hospital shall be claimed as a half-day.In regard to Honorary Lieutenants of the A.A.M.O. performing duties of Dentists and Masseurs at Camps, the time actually occupied in travelling shall be taken into account in computing the minimum duration of a half-day parade of three hours.

Civilian Medical Practitioners. —For examination of recruits, at the rate of 2s. 6d. each for first fire examinations on each day and 1s. for each examination over five.
The maximum rate for officers employed under (2) and (3) shall be for Lieutenant-Colonel.

If lodgings are not provided, 7s. per week is to be paid in lieu.
Deputy Chief Censor, £750 per annum.
Censor at Head-Quarters, £550 per annum.
Senior Censor in each State, £550 per annum.
Senior Assistant Censors (2), £500 per annum.
Other Assistant Censors and Interpreters, £400 per annum.
Junior Assistant Censors, £250 to £300 per annum.
Eight hours, with time off for one meal, shall be considered a working day upon Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on ordinary week days. Where a member of their Censorship Staff devotes part of his time to the duties of his civilian occupation, a corresponding deduction shall be made from the amount to be paid to him.
Payments shall be computed in accordance with Treasury Regulation 47.
Overtime is not payable to a member of the Censorship Staff holding any of the appointments abovementioned nor shall any payment in excess of one day’s pay be issued for any period of twenty-four hours.
During the discontinuance of the training of the Militia Forces, Militia Non-commissioned Officers not above the rank of Sergeant may be called up as follows to attend ‘‘Office" Parades for the purpose of clerical duty, with Militia rate of pay of rank:—
Per Company, Squadron Battery, or similar unit.—One Non-commissioned Officer for the period of training as prescribed in Financial and Allowance Regulation 340.
Per Regimental, Battalion, or Brigade Head-Quarters.—One Non-commissioned Officer for six days per month.

Travelling.
1. Free rail passes will be allowed fortnightly only in such cases where the journey can be undertaken during the ordinary week end leave period.
2. In other cases the privilege will be permitted not more often than once in three months, and then only provided that absence from duty does not extend for more than one week.
In no case shall free steamer passages be allowed.

In the case of single men without dependants in Australia who receive the difference between Imperial and Australian rates on return to the Commonwealth, the additional payment shall cease to accrue from the date of discharge in England.
MISCELLANEOUS WAR MATTERS.

(2) The rate of pay will be such a sum as, with the cost of the daily ration supplied to the prisoner, will amount to the following sums:—
For 2nd Lieutenants and Lieutenants, 4s. per day;
For Captains and officers of higher ranks, 4s. 6d. per day.
These rates are to be followed for naval officer prisoners as well as for military officer prisoners; the table of relative ranks in paragraph 1767, King’s Regulations, being used for this purpose, together with the Official Handbooks of the German and Austro-Hungarian Armies.
(3) Officers will provide themselves with articles of clothing of which they are in need.
Free hospital treatment will be given to officers.
(4) No pay other than working pay, under paragraph 73 will be issued to prisoners who are not officers as defined in sub-paragraph (1); they will be fed and clothed at the public expense.
