(Relating to the constitution and functions of the Academic Board)

HIS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council,
and in pursuance of the University of Sydney Act 1989, has been pleased to approve the By-law made by the Senate of the University of Sydney and set forth hereunder.

The Senate of the University of Sydney, in pursuance of the University
of Sydney Act 1989, makes the following By-law:
The By-laws of the University of Sydney are amended:

CHAPTER 8—ACADEMIC BOARD
Definition
1. In this Chapter, “Board” means the Academic Board.
Functions of Board
2. (1) The functions of the Board are:
(a) to encourage teaching, scholarship and research within the University; and (b) to promote and co-ordinate the work of the Faculties, Colleges, Boards of Studies, Departments and Schools. (2) The Senate may confer or impose on the Board such other functions as it may determine by resolution from time to time.

Constitution of Board
3. (1) The Board consists of voting and non-voting members.
(2) Non-voting members have the same rights and duties as voting members except that they may not vote:
(a) on motions put at meetings of the Board; or
(b) in the election of the presiding member, office bearers or committees of the Board. (3) The Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, is to determine by resolution which members or groups of members referred to in section 5 (1) (a) and (b) are to be voting or non-voting members and may do so on such criteria as it may determine.
(4) All members referred to in section 5 (1) (c)–(t) are voting
members.
Presiding member
4. (1) The presiding member of the Board is to be called the Chair of the Academic Board.
(2) The Chair is to be elected in the manner and for the term
determined by resolution of the Senate.
Board membership
5. (1) The Board is to consist of
the Professors who are members of the academic staff; such other Professors as the Senate may appoint as members;
the Deans of the Faculties;
the Chairpersons of the Boards of Studies in Music and
Social Work;
the Directors of the Sydney College of the Arts and the
Sydney Conservatorium of Music;
the Chairpersons of the Sydney College of the Arts Board
and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music College Board;the Chairpersons of any Faculty which has resolved that its
Dean is not to chair meetings of the Faculty; the Heads of Departments and Schools;
the number of full-time permanent members of the
academic staff calculated in accordance with subsection(3); the President of the Students’ Representative Council; 1992—No. 118
(k) 3 undergraduate student members of each of the Faculties of Arts and Science;
(1) 2 undergraduate student members of each other Faculty;
(m) 2 undergraduate student members of the Sydney College of the Arts; (n) 1 undergraduate student member of the Board of Studies in Social Work; (o) 1 undergraduate student member of the Board of Studies in Music:
(p) 1 undergraduate student member of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music:
(q)
the President of the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association:
(r) 6 postgraduate students;
(s) such other persons as may be appointed by the Senate, on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor, for the term determined by resolution of the Senate; (t) the Chair of the Board, if the Chair is not otherwise a member.
(2) The members of the Board referred to in subsection (1) (i),
(k)–(p) and (r) are to be elected in the manner, at the time and for
the term determined by resolution of the Senate.
(3) The number of members of the Board referred to in subsection (1) (i) is such number of full-time permanent members of the academic staff as is equivalent to one thirtieth of the number of full-time equivalent academic staff positions in the University (as determined by the Registrar) as at the previous 31 March.
(4) In this section, a reference to a full-time permanent member of the academic staff includes a reference to a part-time permanent member of the academic staff who is required to perform academic duties for the University for at least one half of the time required of a corresponding full-time member.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
The purpose of this By-law is to amend the By-laws of the University of Sydney
so as:
(a) to replace Chapter 8 (which relates to the constitution and functions of the Academic Board, Faculties, Boards of Studies, Departments, Schools and Committees) with a Chapter 8 which contains new provisions with respect to the constitution and functions of the Academic Board; and
(b) to repeal Chapter 9 (which relates to Deans of Faculties).
The Senate of the University is empowered to determine by resolution any of the
prescribed matters repealed by this By-law.
