UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY ACT 1989 - BY-LAW

(Relating to the Academic Board)

NEW SOUTH WALES

HIS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, and in pursuance of the University of Sydney Act 1989, has approved of the By-law of the University of Sydney made by the Senate and set forth hereunder.

The Senate of the University of Sydney, in pursuance of the University of Sydney Act 1989, makes the following By-law

Amendment of Chapter 8

Chapter 8 of the By-laws of the University of Sydney is amended:

(a)

by inserting in section 1 after the words “incorporated the provisions of'' the words "the University of Sydney Act 1989 and";

(b)

by omitting section 2 and by inserting instead the following section:

2. The members of the Academic Board shall be –

(a)

the Professors who are members of the full-time permanent academic staff;

(b)

such other Professors as the Senate may appoint as members;

(c) such of the following as are not Professors:
(i) the Deans of the Faculties;

(ii)

the Chairpersons of the Boards of Studies in Divinity, Music and Social Work;

(iii)

the Directors of the Institute of Nursing, the University of Sydney Institute of Education, the Sydney College of the Arts and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and the College Principal of the Cumberland College of Health Sciences;

(iv)

the Chairpersons of the Institute of Nursing Board, the University of Sydney Institute of Education Board, the Sydney College of the Arts College Board, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music College Board and the Cumberland College of Health Sciences College Board where those Chairpersons are neither Directors nor the College Principal; and

(v) the Heads of Departments and Schools;

(d)

other full-time permanent and fractional permanent members of the academic staff, being in number to the nearest whole number one-third the number of positions created by the Senate and to which a Professor may be appointed, at the time nominations close for the election, elected in the manner, at a time and for the period prescribed by Senate resolution;

(e) the President of the Students’ Representative Council;
(f) not more than -

(i)

3 undergraduate student members of each of the Faculties of Arts and Science;

(ii)

2 undergraduate student members of each other Faculty; and

(iii)

2 undergraduate students of each of the Cumberland college of Health Sciences, the Institute of Nursing, the Sydney College of the Arts and, until and including elections in 1991, the University of Sydney Institute of Education,

elected in the manner, at a time and for the period
prescribed by Senate resolution;

(g) 1 undergraduate student member of –
(i) the Board of Studies in Social Work
(ii) either the Board of Studies in Divinity or the Board of Studies in Music; and
(iii) the Sydney Conservatorium of Music,
elected in the manner, at a time and for the period
prescribed by Senate resolution;
(h) the President of the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association;

(i)      6 postgraduate students, elected in the manner, at a time and for the period prescribed by Senate resolution; and

(j)

the Chairman of the Board, if the Chairman is not otherwise a member of the Board.

(c) by inserting after section 2 the following section:

2A (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of section 2, on a day or days to be determined by the Vice-chancellor after the Commencement of this section, elections shall be held to provide for the addition to the elected members of the Academic Board of members of the non-professorial academic staff and of students of the Cumberland College of Health Sciences, the Institute of Nursing, the University of Sydney Institute of Education, the Sydney College of the Arts, and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in such numbers as the Senate, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, may prescribe.

(2) The non-professorial academic staff members so elected shall hold office until 31 December 1991 and the student members so elected shall hold office until 31 December 1990.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The object of this By-law is to amend the By-laws of the University of Sydney to subsitute the provisions dealing with the constitution of the Academic Board and

the election of elected members of the Academic Board.
