TRAFFIC ACT 1909—REGULATION

(Relating to vehicle dimensions)

HIS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, and in pursuance of the Traffic Act 1909, has been pleased to make the Regulation set forth hereunder.

Commencement

1. This Regulation commences on 21st May, 1993,

Amendment

2. The Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 are amended:

(a)	by omitting from Regulation 113G (1) and (2) the matter “50 m” wherever occurring and by inserting instead the matter “53 m”;
(b)	by omitting Regulation 118 (1) (a) (iii) and by inserting instead the following subparagraph:

(iii)  projects more than 150 mm beyond the extreme outer portion of either side of the vehicle or trailer, but nothing in this subparagraph applies to any rear vision mirror, signalling device, side mounted lamp or tyre pressure monitoring system permitted by these Regulations to be fitted to the vehicle;

(c) by omitting from Regulation 118 (1) (9 the matter “17.5 m” and by inserting instead the matter “19 m”;

(d) by omitting paragraph 44A of Schedule F and by inserting instead the following paragraph:

44A. Length of motor vehicles—general:

The length of a motor vehicle (other than an articulated vehicle,

a bus or a trailer) must not exceed 12.5 m.

(e)	by omitting from paragraph 44B (1) of Schedule F the matter “17.5 m” and by inserting instead the matter “19 m”;
(f)	by omitting from paragraph 44B (2) of Schedule F the matter “9 m” and by inserting instead the matter “9.5 m”;
(g)	by omitting paragraph 44C of Schedule F and by inserting instead the following paragraph:

44C. Length of semi-trailers:

(1) The length of a semi-trailer that is being used to carry

livestock must not exceed 12.5 m.

(2) The length of a semi-trailer that is not being used to carry livestock, and that does not consist of a low-loader float, must not exceed 13.7 m.
(3) A semi-trailer must not have any part which projects more
than 1.9 m radially forward of the axis of its pivot pin.
(4) The distance from the point of articulation of a semi-trailer

to the rearmost extremity of the rear overhang must not

exceed 12.3 m.

(5) For the purposes of this paragraph, the length of a semi-trailer does not include any refrigeration or other auxiliary equipment, or of any loading space, of a reduced width at the front of the semi-trailer.

(h) by omitting paragraphs 44E and 44F of Schedule F and by inserting instead the following paragraphs:

44E. Length of trailers:
(1) The length of a pig trailer must not exceed 12.5 m.

(2) The length of the body of a dog trailer that is being used to

carry livestock must not exceed 12.5 m.

(3) The length of the body of a dog trailer that is not being

used to carry livestock must not exceed 13.7 m.

(4) In the case of a trailer with 2 axle groups that was first registered on or after 1 January 1983, the distance from the point of coupling of the trailer to the centre of the foremost axle must not exceed 5 m.

(5) In the case of a trailer that has 1 axle group, the distance
from the point of coupling of the trailer to the foremost

extremity of the rear overhang must not exceed 8.5 m.

44E Length of buses:
The length of a bus must not exceed 12.5 m.

(i)  by inserting in paragraph 45 of Schedule F after the word “mirror” the words “, side mounted lamp”;

(j)	by omitting paragraph 45A of Schedule F and the Schedule to that paragraph;
(k)	by omitting paragraph 66 of Schedule F and by inserting instead the following paragraph:

66. Front and rear overhang:

Meaning of “rear overhang”

(1) In this paragraph, “rear overhang” has the meaning given in Regulation 2 (1), with the following qualification: where there are 2 or more axles in the rear half of the vehicle and the rearmost of those axles is a retractable axle or a steerable axle, that axle is to be disregarded in determining the point referred to in paragraphs (b), (c) or (d) of the definition of “rear overhang” in Regulation 2 (1).

Articulated vehicles

(2) The rear overhang of an articulated vehicle must not exceed 60 per cent of the distance between the point of articulation of the vehicle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang of its semi-trailer, or 3.7 m, whichever is the shorter length.
Trailers
(3) The rear overhang of a trailer with 1 axle group which was first registered on or after 1 January 1983 must not exceed the length of the loading space forward of the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 3.7 m, whichever is the shorter length.

(4) The rear overhang a trailer with 2 axle groups must not exceed 60 per cent of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 3.7 m, whichever is the shorter length.

Buses

(5) The rear overhang of a bus must not exceed 60 per cent of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 3.7 m, whichever is the shorter length.

Motor tricycles and sidecars

(6) A motor tricycle, or a motor cycle to which a sidecar is attached, must not have any part which projects more than 600 mm ahead of the outer extremity of the front wheel or more than 900 mm behind the outer extremity of the rear wheel.

Other motor cycles

(7) A motor cycle (other than a motor tricycle or a motor cycle to which a sidecar is attached) must not have any part which projects more than 150 mm ahead of the outer extremity of the front wheel or more than 300 mm behind the outer extremity of the rear wheel.

Other vehicles
(8) The rear overhang of a motor vehicle (other than an articulated vehicle, trailer, bus, motor cycle or mobile crane) must not exceed 60 per cent of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 3.7 m, whichever is the shorter length.

(l)	by omitting from paragraph 86OA (1) of Schedule F the matter “12.2 m” and by inserting instead the matter “12.5 m”;
(m)	by omitting paragraph 162 of Schedule F and by inserting instead the following paragraph:

162. Vehicle dimensions:

Articulated vehicles

(I) The length of an articulated vehicle (other than an
articulated bus) may exceed 17.5 m but must not exceed 19.0 m.
(2) The distance from the point of articulation of an articulated

vehicle to the foremost extremity of the rear overhang of its

semi-trailer must not exceed 9.5 m.

(3) The rear overhang of an articulated vehicle (other than an articulated bus):

(a)	may exceed 50 per cent of the distance between the point of articulation of the vehicle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang of its semi-trailer, or 3.2 m. whichever is the shorter length; but
(b)	must not exceed 60 per cent of the distance between the point of articulation of the vehicle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang of its semi-trailer, or 3.7 m, whichever is the shorter length.

(4) The length of a semi-trailer that is being used to carry livestock must not exceed 12.5 m.

(5) The length of a semi-trailer that is not being used to carry livestock must not exceed 13.7 m.

(6) For the purposes of this paragraph, the length of a semi-trailer does not include any refrigeration or other auxiliary equipment, or of any loading space, of a reduced width at the front of the semi-trailer.

Buses

(7) The length of a bus may exceed 12.2 m but must not exceed

12.5 m.

(8) The rear overhang of a bus with a single axle towards the rear may exceed 3.2 m but must not exceed 60 per cent of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 3.7 m, whichever is the shorter length.
Trailers
(9) The length of a pig trailer may exceed 11 m but must not exceed 12.5 m.

(10) The length of the body of a dog trailer that is being used to
carry livestock may exceed 11 m but must not exceed 12.5 m.
(11) The length of the body of a dog trailer that is not being

used to carry livestock may exceed 11 m but must not exceed

13.7 m.

Low-loader floats

(12) The distance from the point of articulation of a low-loader

float to the foremost extremity of the rear overhang may exceed

9. 5 m.
(13) The distance from the point of articulation of a low-loader

float to the rearmost extremity of the rear overhang may exceed
12.3 m.
Other vehicles

(14) The length of a motor vehicle (other than an articulated vehicle, bus, pig trailer or dog trailer) may exceed 11 m but must not exceed 12.5 m.

(15) The rear overhang of a vehicle (other than an articulated vehicle, bus, low-loader float, trailer, motor cycle or a mobile crane):

(a) may exceed 3.2 m; but

(b) must not exceed 60 per cent of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 3.7 m, whichever is the shorter length.

(n)	by inserting in paragraph 163 (1) (c) of Schedule F after the word “mirror” the words “, side mounted lamp”;
(o)	by omitting from paragraph 164 (1) of Schedule F the matter “12.2 m” and by inserting instead the matter “12.5 m”.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The object of this Regulation is to amend the Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 to

increase maximum dimension limits for heavy vehicles and trailers. The increased

limits are in conformity with proposals of the National Road Transport
Commission.
