TRAFFIC ACT 1909 - REGULATION

(Allowing taxis to stop in certain areas where stopping

of vehicles is otherwise prohibited)

HIS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, and in pursuance of the Traffic Act 1909, has been pleased to make the Regulation set forth hereunder.

Commencement

1. This Regulation commences on 1 June 1990.

Amendments

2. The Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 are amended:

(a)

by omitting from Regulation 54 (7) the matter "and (11)" and by inserting instead ", (11) and (15)";

(b) by inserting after Regulation 54 (14) the following clause:

(15) The driver of a taxi-cab does not contravene this Regulation merely because the driver causes the taxi-cab to become stationary or to wait (for a period not exceeding one minute), for the sole purpose of picking up or setting down passengers or luggage, on those portions of public street within the Central Sydney Taxi Zone, as described in Schedule B, which are controlled by ''no stopping" signs displaying a

reference to particular days or times when restrictions on

stopping apply.

(c) by inserting after Schedule A the following Schedule:

SCHEDULE B - CENTRAL SYDNEY TAXI ZONE

For the purposes of Regulation 54 (15), the area designated as the Central Sydney Taxi Zone consists of that area within the City of Sydney bounded by the Harbour from Day Street, Darling Harbour, in the west to the Opera House in the north; and thence along Macquarie Street, Prince Albert Road, College Street, Wentworth Avenue and Elizabeth Street in the east; Eddy Avenue, Pitt Street, Railway Square and Broadway in the south; and Harris Street, William Henry Street, Pier Street, Harbour Street and Day Street in the west, returning to the waterfront at Darling Harbour. The area includes those named public streets specified as constituting the boundary of the area.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The object of this Regulation is to amend the Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 so as to permit drivers of taxi-cabs to stop briefly in order to set down or pick up passengers or luggage on certain streets within the City of Sydney in zones in which stopping would otherwise be prohibited.
