Traffic Act 1909 Motor Traffic Amendment (Taxis and Private Hire Cars) Regulation 1999 (1999-103) [GG No 25 of 26.2.1999, p 1069] (NSW)
1999 No 103
New South Wales
Motor Traffic Amendment (Taxis and private Hire Cars) regulation 1999 under the Traffic Act 1909 His Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, has made the following Regulation under the Traffic Act 1909.
CARL SCULLY MP
Minister for RoadsSection 4D (Traffic control signs) of the Traffic Act 1909 provides that the Roads and Traffic Authority may, by means of a notice on a traffic control sign prescribed for the purposes of that section, give directions for the control of pedestrians or the drivers or riders of vehicles or horses on specified roads or road-related areas.
Regulation 54 of the Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 prescribes such signs by reference to illustrations in a Schedule to the Regulation. However, the Regulation also provides for the addition of words, figures or symbols to any of the signs as illustrated to indicate (among other things) that certain classes or descriptions of vehicles are excepted from the direction represented by the sign concerned. For example. a sign may prohibit a left turn at a particular intersection, but exempt buses and taxis from that prohibition. The object of this Regulation is to ensure that any such exemption granted to taxis also extends to private hire cars unless the traffic control sign concerned indicates otherwise.
This Regulation also corrects grammatical errors by way of law revision. This Regulation is made under the Traffic Act 1909, and, in particular, under sections 3 (the general regulation-making power) and 4D.
