His Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, has made the following Regulation under the Traffic Act 1909.

Explanatory note

The object of this Regulation is to enable school zone speed limit signs to be erected so as to indicate the speed limit applicable within a network of public streets.

This Regulation is made under the Traffic Act 1909, including section 3 (the general regulation-making power) and section 4A.

1 Name of Regulation

This Regulation is the Motor Traffic Amendment (School Zones)

Regulation 1997.

2 Commencement

This Regulation commences on 1 February 1997.

3     Amendment of Motor Traffic Regulations 1935

The Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 are amended as set out in
Schedule 1.

Schedule 1 Amendments

(Clause 3)

Regulation 54A Speed limit signs

Insert after Regulation 54A (2):

(2A) Clause (2) does not apply to a sign in or to the effect of the form illustrated and described in Diagram 3 in the Schedule to this Regulation if
(a) the sign is erected or displayed to indicate the speed limit applicable to any length of public street in a network of 2 or more public streets, and
(b) the sign is erected or displayed on or near, or marked on, each of the public streets that provides access to that network of public streets in such a position as to be clearly visible to the driver of an approaching motor vehicle, and
(c) a sign in or to the effect of the form illustrated and described in Diagram 4 in the Schedule to this Regulation is erected or displayed on or near each of the public streets that provides an exit from that network of public streets in such a position as to be clearly visible to the driver of an approaching motor vehicle who is leaving that network of public streets.
