1 Name of Regulation
This Regulation is the Motor Traffic Amendment (Bicycle Lanes)
Regulation 1996.
2 Commencement
This Regulation commences on 1 July 1994.
3 Amendment of Motor Traffic Regulations 1935
The Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 are amended as set out in
Schedule 1.

Amendment of Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 Schedule 1 [5] Regulation 54C
Insert after Regulation 54B:
54C Bicycle lanes
(l) In this Regulation, bicycle lane means a lane marked along a public street for the passage of bicycles that:
(a) begins at a sign similar to the form of the sign illustrated in Diagram 37A in the Schedule to Regulation 54, and (b) ends at the nearest of the following beyond the beginning of the lane: (i) a sign similar to the form of the sign illustrated in Diagram 38A in the Schedule to Regulation 54,
(ii) an intersection,
(iii) a dead end.
(2) The driver of a motor vehicle must not drive the motor
vehicle in a bicycle lane.(3) Clause (2) does not prevent a person driving a motor vehicle in a bicycle lane for not more than 100 metres for the purpose of:
(a) turning into or from the street with the bicycle lane, or (b) overtaking on the left of a vehicle turning right, or (c) stopping or parking the motor vehicle in accordance with a traffic control sign and these Regulations, or (d) re-entering the traffic stream after having stopped or parked the motor vehicle in or adjacent to the bicycle lane. (4) Nothing in this Regulation authorises a person driving a motor vehicle to turn into or from a street, overtake on the left of a vehicle turning right or re-enter the traffic stream after having stopped or parked the motor vehicle if to do so would contravene another provision of these Regulations.
