  1. Name of Technical Standard [see Note 1]

(1)This Technical Standard is the Telecommunications Technical Standard (Analogue interworking and non-interference requirements for Customer Equipment for connection to the Public Switched Telephone Network — AS/ACIF S002) 2001.

(2)This Technical Standard may also be cited as AS/ACIF S002–2001.

Note 1   The alternate citation mentioned in subsection (2) is the name by which the AS/ACIF Standard, adopted by this Technical Standard under section 7, is usually cited. The AS/ACIF Standard was published in 2001.

Note 2   The AS/ACIF Standard, as adopted by this Standard, does not include any amendments that may subsequently be made by Standards Australia and the Australian Communications Industry Forum. If amendments are made, the terms of this Technical Standard will differ from those of the AS/ACIF Standard unless the AS/ACIF Standard amendments are adopted by the ACA.

This Technical Standard commences on gazettal.

  1. Revocation of ACA Technical Standard 002–1997

ACA Technical Standard 002–1997, made by the Australian Communications Authority on 4 December 1997 and notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 8 December 1997, is revoked.

Note   The Telecommunications Labelling (Customer Equipment and Customer Cabling) Notice 2001 contains arrangements for the continuing operation of ACA Technical Standard 002–1997 in certain circumstances.

  1. Objects of Technical Standard

The objects of this Technical Standard are:

(a)to protect the integrity of telecommunications networks and facilities; and

(b)to protect the health and safety of persons who:

(i)operate; or

(ii)work on; or

(iii)use services supplied by means of; or

(iv)are otherwise reasonably likely to be affected by the operation of —

a telecommunications network or facility; and

(c)to ensure that customer equipment:

(i)designed, or intended, for connection to a telecommunications network; and

(ii)used to supply a voice frequency service —

can be used to give access to an emergency call service; and

(d)to ensure the interoperability of customer equipment used in the supply of a standard telephone service with a telecommunications network.

  1. Definitions

In this Technical Standard:

Act means the Telecommunications Act 1997.

analogue interface means an interface which operates with analogue signals.

AS/ACIF Standard means the Australian Communications Industry Forum/ Australian Standard: Analogue interworking and non-interference requirements for Customer Equipment for connection to the Public Switched Telephone Network (AS/ACIF S002: 2001) as existing on 5 April 2001.

AS/ACIF S002-2001 (Amdt No. 1/2002) means amendment No. 1 of the Australian Communications Industry Forum/Australian Standard: Analogue interworking and non-interference requirements for Customer Equipment for connection to the Public Switched Telephone Network — AS/ACIF S002: 2001 as published by the Australian Communications Industry Forum and Standards Australia International Limited in December 2001.

AS/ACIF S002-2001 (Amdt No. 2/2004) means the amendment of the Australian Communications Industry Forum/Australian Standard: Analogue interworking and non-interference Requirements for Customer Equipment for connection to the Public Switched Telephone Network — AS/ACIF S002:2001, as published by the Australian Communications Industry Forum and Standards Australia International Limited in July 2004.

customer equipment has the same meaning as in subsection 21 (1) of the Act.

facility has the same meaning as in subsection 374 (2) of the Act.

public switched telephone network means the part of a telecommunications network which enables a customer to establish a connection for voice frequency communication with another customer, either automatically or with operator assistance.

telecommunications network has the same meaning as in subsection 374 (1) of the Act.

Note   The following expressions used in this Technical Standard are defined in section 7 of the Act:

·emergency call service

·standard telephone service.

  1. Application of Technical Standard

This Technical Standard applies to customer equipment that is designed, or intended, for connection to the public switched telecommunications network through an analogue interface.

  1. Standards with which customer equipment must comply

Customer equipment to which this Technical Standard applies must comply with the AS/ACIF Standard, as amended by:

(a)AS/ACIF S002-2001 (Amdt No. 1/2002); and

(b)AS/ACIF S002-2001 (Amdt No. 2/2004).
