48 Supreme Court Judges Appointment Act 1.983, No. 6 BE IT ENACTED by the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:- 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the Supreme Court Judges Appointment Act 1983. 2. Interpretation . In this Act, except where a contrary intention appears- " Judge " means a Judge of the Court; " the Court " means the Supreme Court of Queensland ; " the prescribed number " means the number prescribed by section 3 as the maximum number of Judges. 3. Maximum number of Judges. The number of Judges of the Court shall not exceed 20 4. Appointment up to maximum number . Whenever the number of Judges in office for the time being is less than the prescribed number, it shall be lawful for the Governor in Council, by commission in Her Majesty's name to appoint a duly qualified person or a number of duly qualified persons to be a Judge or Judges but so that the number of Judges in office for the time being does not exceed the prescribed number. 5. Appointment within Governor ' s discretion . The Governor in Council is not bound by this Act to make at any time an appointment or appointments authorized by section 4 increasing the number of Judges in office for the time being. 6. Amendment of s. 8 of 31 Vic. No. 23. Section 8 of the SupremeCourt Act of 1867 is amended by omitting the words " not exceeding three in number " and substituting the words " not exceeding the number declared by law for the time being to be the maximum number of judges thereof ". 7. Amendment of s. 4 of 12 Geo. 5 No. 15 . Section 4 of The SupremeCourt Act of 1921 is amended by omitting subsection (6). 8. Collective title of Supreme Court Acts. The Supreme Court Acts 1861-1982 may, consequent upon the passing of this Act, be cited as the Supreme Court Acts 1861-1983.
