Summary Offences (Consumption of Dogs and Cats) Amendment Act 2004

An Act to amend the Summary Offences Act 1953.

The Parliament of South Australia enacts as follows:

Part 1—Preliminary

1—Short title

This Act may be cited as the Summary Offences (Consumption of Dogs and Cats) Amendment Act 2004.

2—Commencement

This Act will come into operation on a day to be fixed by proclamation.

3—Amendment provisions

In this Act, a provision under a heading referring to the amendment of a specified Act amends the Act so specified.

Part 2—Amendment of Summary Offences Act 1953

4—Insertion of section 10

After section 9A insert:

10—Offence to consume etc dogs or cats

1. (1)

   A person who knowingly—

   1. (a)

      kills or otherwise processes a dog or cat for the purpose of human consumption; or

   2. (b)

      supplies to another person a dog or cat (whether alive or not), or meat from a dog or cat, for the purpose of human consumption; or

   3. (c)

      consumes meat from a dog or cat,

is guilty of an offence.

Maximum penalty: $1 250.

1. (2)

   In this section—

cat means an animal of the species Felis catus;

dog means an animal of the species Canis familiaris;
