s1 2 s2 Sugar Industry (Calculation of Raw Sugar Equivalent) No. 453, 1996 ˙ Short title 1. This guideline may be cited as the Sugar Industry (Calculation of Raw Sugar Equivalent) Guideline 1996 . ˙ Method of calculating raw sugar equivalent 2.(1) Subsections (2) to (4) fix the method of calculating raw sugar equivalent for the purpose of the Act, part 7. 1 (2) The raw sugar equivalent of an amount of sugar is the amount converted from tonnes actual to tonnes at a polarisation stated in a standard and then to its equivalent tonnes under subsections (3) to (5). (3) The conversion from tonnes actual to tonnes at the polarisation is a mass balance calculation which assumes the following— (a) the ratios of ash, reducing sugars and moisture to total impurities remain constant; (b) only molasses is used or produced in the transformation; (c) the molasses purity is equal to (44.67 – 17.8 x log(0.9 x reducing sugars/ash)), rounded to the nearest whole number. (4) The tonnes of sugar adjusted to the polarisation are then adjusted for every full degree of polarisation as follows— (a) below 94° Z to and including 93° Z—deduct an additional 2.50%; (b) below 95° Z to and including 94° Z—deduct an additional 2.00%; (c) below 96° Z to and including 95° Z—deduct 1.60%; (d) 96° Z—no adjustment; (e) above 96° Z to and including 97° Z—add 1.50%; (f) above 97° Z to and including 98° Z—add an additional 1.25%; 1 The Act, part 7 (Acquisition of sugar)
s3 3 s3 Sugar Industry (Calculation of Raw Sugar Equivalent) No. 453, 1996 (g) above 98° Z to and including 99° Z—add an additional 1.00%. 2 (5) When making the adjustment under subsection (4), fractions of a degree of polarisation are calculated in the same proportion. (6) In this section— “polarisation” means the sucrose content of the sugar expressed as degrees of polarisation, fixed by polarimetric analysis using— (a) the official International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis method; or (b) another method fixed by a standard. “standard” means a standard under the Act, section 114. 3 “tonnes actual” means the amount, expressed in tonnes, of the sugar to be converted to raw sugar equivalent. ˙ Repeal 3.(1) The Sugar Industry (Calculation of Raw Sugar Equivalent) Guideline 1992 is repealed. (2) This section expires the day after it commences. ENDNOTES 1. Made by the Queensland Sugar Corporation on 10 December 1996. 2. Notified in the gazette on 20 December 1996. 3. Laid before the Legislative Assembly on . . . 4. The administering agency is the Department of Primary Industries, Fisheries and Forestry. © State of Queensland 1996 2 The amounts used to make the adjustments are derived from The Rules of the Sugar Association of London , rule 106(b). A copy of the rule may be inspected at the Corporation at 20th floor, Commonwealth Bank Building, 240 Queen Street, Brisbane. 3 The Act, section 114 (Minister’s standards)
