HEREAS the discovery and exploration of the River Murray fieamhle.

facilitate the establishment and prosperity of the Province of South W by the HonorabJe Charles Sturt have greatly tended to

Australia; and, in the prosecution of such discovery and exploration, and in other public services 0 -c-cter, the said Honor- able Charles Sturt hath sustiimed great toils and privations to the p'emanent weakening of his health, and hath thereby become less capable of the performance of public duties: And whereas it is ex- pedient by way of reward of such discovery, and of compensation for such toils and privations, and loss of health, to provide for the honorable .- retirement from the Public Service of the said Honomble ChardZZsturt by conferring upon him an annuity for the term of his natural life:

Re it therefore Enacted by His Excellency the Lieutenant-Go- ptrtn',;ily

h i v e Council thereof, that an annual payment or annuity of six Hundred Pounds shall be paid to the Honorab& Charles Sturt, CO- lonial Secretary of the said Province, for the term of his natural life; and the said annual payment or annuity shall be deemed and considered to commence and take effect from the first b y of Janwry next and

the first payment of a proportionate part thereof on the first day of

the first day of July, the first day of October, the first day of

April &, and shall thereafter be paid quarterly, that is to say, on

January, and the first day of April in every year: And the said annual payment or annuity shall and may be issuing and payable out of, and charged and chargeable upon the Public Revenue of the said Province, and the acquittance or acquittances, receipt or receipts of the said Charles Sturt, or of such other person or persons as shall be duly authorised and appointed to receive such annual paymeut or annuity, or any part thereof, shall be good and sufficient dis- charges for the payment thereof; and the said annual payment or annuity shall be free and clear from all taxes, rates, and assessments, and all other chargm whatsoever.

2. And be it Enacted, That it shall be lawful for the Colonial Treasurer for the time being of the said Province, duly authorised by any warrant under the hand of the Governor aforesaid, and which warrant the said Governor is hereby authorised and em- powered to issue, to pay the said annuity according to the provision hereinbefore contained.

3. And be it Enacted, That this Act shall not be, nor be drawn into, a precedent for the grant of a retiring pension to a,ny other person, now or hereafter holding any office under Her Majesty, or

the Government of the said Province.
