Stock Foods Amendment (Ruminant
Tissue) Regulation 1997

His Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, has made the following Regulation under the Stock Foods Act 1940.

Explanatory note
The object of this Regulation is to prescribe the information to be included on packages of stock foods that contain animal tissue, including (in particular) ruminant tissue.
This Regulation gives effect to a decision of the Agricultural Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand, a body representing Ministers of the Crown of the various States and Territories, the Commonwealth and New Zealand.
This Regulation is made under the Stock Foods Act 1940, including section
35 (the general regulation making power) and section 6.

1 Name of Regulation
This Regulation is the Stock Foods Amendment (Ruminant
Tissue) Regulation 1997.2 Commencement
This Regulation commences on 2 May 1997.

Clause 10A
Insert after clause 10:
10A Additional matter to be included on labels in relation to
stock food containing animal tissue: section 6
(1) In this clause: animal tissue means tissue or blood (other than tallow) derived from the carcass of any animal or bird, and includes any substance produced from or containing any such tissue or blood.
non-ruminant tissue means animal tissue that is not ruminant tissue. ruminant animal means an animal that has a rumen, and includes an animal belonging to any of the following classes of animal, namely, cattle, sheep, goats and deer.
ruminant tissue means animal tissue derived from the
carcass of a ruminant animal.(2)
For the purposes of section 6 (2) (e) of the Act, the label attached to a package of any manufactured stock food containing ruminant tissue must contain one of the following statements:
(a)
the statement “This product contains ruminant material—DO NOT FEED TO CATTLE, SHEEP, GOATS, DEER OR OTHER RUMINANTS”,
(b)
the statement “This product contains ruminant material—DO NOT FEED TO RUMINANTS”,
(c) the statement “For pig use only”, (d) the statement “For poultry use only”, (e) the statement “For pig and poultry use only”, (f) the statement “For (insert name of non-ruminant
species) use only”.

(3) For the purposes of section 6 (2) (e) of the Act, the label attached to a package of any manufactured stock food containing non-ruminant tissue must contain one of the following statements:
(a) the statement “This product does not contain ruminant material”, (b) the statement “For pig use only”, (c) the statement “For poultry use only”, (d) the statement “For pig and poultry use only”, (e) the statement “For (insert name of non-ruminant species) use only”. (4) The lettering in any statement referred to in subclause
(2) or (3):
(a) must be prominently located on the label in letters at least 3 millimetres high, and (b) must be printed on a background of contrasting colour. (5) The label on which the statement appears must measure
at least 45 millimetres by 120 millimetres.(6) This clause does not apply to:
(a) stock food manufactured before 1 July 1997, or (b) stock food that is manufactured as pet food, as food for caged birds (other than poultry) or as food for ornamental fish.
