STATES GRANTS (UNIVERSITIES ASSISTANCE) AMENDMENT ACT 1977

An Act to amend the States Grants (Universities) Act 1976 and the States Grants (Universities Assistance) Act 1976.

BE IT ENACTED by the Queen, and the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Australia, as follows: —

PART I—PRELIMINARY

Short title.

1. This Act may be cited as the States Grants (Universities Assistance) Amendment Act 1977.

Commencement.

2. This Act shall come into operation on the day on which it receives the Royal Assent.

PART II—AMENDMENTS OF THE STATES GRANTS (UNIVERSITIES) ACT 1976

Principal Act.

3. The States Grants (Universities) Act 1976 is in this Part referred to as the Principal Act.

Recurrent grants in respect of halls of residence and residential colleges.

4. Section 12 of the Principal Act is amended—

(a) by omitting from sub-section (2) the figures “$8,000” and substituting the figures “$8,083”;

(b) by omitting from sub-section (2) the figures “$125.72” and substituting the figures “$127.02”; and

(c) by omitting sub-section (4) and substituting the following sub-section:—

“(4) For the purposes of sub-section (3), the basic grant in relation to a residential college is—

(a) if the prescribed number of students in relation to that college is not more than 50—$288.68;

(b) if the prescribed number of students in relation to that college is more than 50 but not more than 75—$288.68 reduced by $2.31 for each student by which the prescribed number of students exceeds 50;

(c) if the prescribed number of students in relation to that college is more than 75 but not more than 100—$230.94 reduced by $0.92 for each student by which the prescribed number of students exceeds 75; and

(d) if the prescribed number of students in relation to that college is more than 100—$207.85 reduced by $0.18 for each student by which the prescribed number of students exceeds 100.”.

Grants for expenditure on University building projects, &c.

5. Section 16 of the Principal Act is amended by omitting from sub-section (6) the figures “$58,257,000” and substituting the figures “$60,217,000”.

Additional grants for cost increases— University building projects, &c.

6. Section 16a of the Principal Act is amended by omitting from sub-section (3) the figures “$6,657,000” and substituting the figures “$8,617,000”.

Schedules 1, 2, 3 and 4.

7. Schedules 1, 2, 3 and 4 to the Principal Act are repealed and the following Schedules substituted:—

8. The States Grants (Universities Assistance) Act 1976 is in this Part referred to as the Principal Act.

Interpretation.

9. Section 3 of the Principal Act is amended by omitting from the definition of “minor building project” in sub-section (1) the figures “$110,000” and substituting the figures “$112,000”.

Grants for expenditure on building projects.

10. Section 10 of the Principal Act is amended by omitting from sub-section (3) the figures “$537,000” and substituting the figures “$562,000”.

Schedules 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

11. Schedules 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to the Principal Act are repealed and the following Schedules substituted:—

Schedule 6.

12. Schedule 6 to the Principal Act is amended—

(a) by omitting clauses (a) and (b) of paragraph 1 and substituting the following clauses:—

“(a) an amount equal to the sum of $8,471 and the amount ascertained by multiplying $132.15 by the prescribed number of students in relation to that hall of residence; or

“(b) an amount ascertained by multiplying $299.32 by the prescribed number of students in relation to that hall of residence,”;

 

(b) by omitting paragraph 3 and substituting the following paragraph: —

“3. For the purposes of paragraph 2, the basic grant in respect of a residential college is—

(a) if the prescribed number of students in relation to that college is less than 50—$299.32;

(b) if the prescribed number of students in relation to that college is more than 49 but less than 75—$299.32 reduced by $2.26 for each student by which the prescribed number of students exceeds 50;

(c) if the prescribed number of students in relation to that college is more than 74 but less than 100—$242.84 reduced by $1.13 for each student by which the prescribed number of students exceeds 75; and

(d) if the prescribed number of students in relation to that college is more than 99—$214.61 reduced by $0.18 for each student by which the prescribed number of students exceeds 100.”; and

(c) by omitting from clause 5 the word “sub-section” and substituting the word “paragraph”.
