(Special Assistance)

An Act to grant Financial
Assistance to the States of South Australia and Tasmania.

BE
it enacted by the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty, the Senate, and the House of Representatives
of the Commonwealth of Australia, as follows:—
Short
title.
1. This Act may be cited as the States Grants (Special
Assistance) Act 1971.
Commencement.
2. This Act shall come into operation on the day on which it receives
the Royal Assent.
Payment
of financial assistance to South Australia and Tasmania.
3.—(1.) Subject to this section, there is payable
during the year that commenced on the first day of July, One thousand nine
hundred and seventy-one, for the purpose of financial assistance—
(a) to the State of South Australia—the sum of Seven million dollars; and
(b)to the State of Tasmania—the sum of Seven million eight hundred thousand
dollars.
(2.) A sum payable to a State under the last
preceding sub-section shall be reduced by the sum of any amounts paid to that
State under section 4 of the States
Grants (Special Assistance) Act 1970.
Advances
for year 1972–73.
4.The Treasurer may, during the period of six months
commencing on the first day of July, One thousand nine hundred and seventy-two,
make advances to the State of South Australia or the State of Tasmania, for the
purpose of financial assistance, of amounts not exceeding in the whole a sum
equal to one-half of the amount specified in the last preceding section in
relation to that State.
