This instrument is the Social Security (Exempt Lump Sum – Western Australian Government Taxi Transition Adjustment Assistance Grant) Determination 2017.

  1. Each provision of this instrument specified in column 1 of the table commences, or is taken to have commenced, in accordance with column 2 of the table. Any other statement in column 2 has effect according to its terms.

This instrument is made under paragraph 8(11)(d) of the Social Security Act 1991.

  1. Definitions

In this instrument:

Act means the Social Security Act 1991.

Eligible taxi plate owners means current holders of Perth metropolitan taxi plates purchased prior to 18 December 2015.

Transition Assistance Package means a package established by the Western Australian Government to assist existing taxi and omnibus industry participants transition to the new operating environment following regulatory and policy reforms, including funds for the provision of a one-off ex-gratia lump sum payment to assist taxi plate owners adjust to a new, more competitive environment.

Adjustment Assistance Grant means a payment made from the Transition Assistance Package by the Western Australian Department of Transport to eligible taxi plate owners.  This grant is capped at $20 million.

  1. Exempt lump sum

For the purposes of paragraph 8(11)(d) of the Act, the gross amount of an Adjustment Assistance Grant made from the Transition Assistance Package is an exempt lump sum.
