APPEARANCES:                  Not applicable – Heard on the Papers

  1. O’CONNOR JR: This is an application by Bryan Ontronen, Pekka Ontronen, Tony Hutton and Richard Chevis under s. 245 of the Mineral Resources Act 1989 (“the Act”) for a mining lease over land as described in the application about 36.5 km south south/west of Cloncurry for the purpose of mining for gold, silver, copper, cobalt and rare earths for a term of 5 years.  The application was lodged with the Mining Registrar in Mt Isa on 3 July 2001.  The application required a consideration of certain native title issues which were eventually resolved.

  2. Two of the applicants, Pekka Ontronen and Tony Hutton, have now advised the Mining Registrar that they no longer wish to proceed with the application.  The other two applicants, Bryan Ontronen and Richard Chevis, have not replied to requests of the Registrar as to whether they too wish to abandon their application.  The time nominated for reply has elapsed and there is no indication of the present whereabouts of Bryan Ontronen and Richard Chevis.

  3. In view of the above situation, I recommend to the Honourable the Minister for Mines and Energy that the application for mining lease be rejected.
