                This Standard may be cited as Radiocommunications Standard (Cordless Telephone) No. 1 of 1997.

2              Interpretation

         (1)   In this Standard:

cordless telephone means a radiocommunications device that is capable of forming part of a cordless telephone service, within the meaning of the Radiocommunications (Interpretation) Determination 2000, that operates on the frequency 137 MHz or a frequency less than 137 MHz.

cordless telephone frequency band means any of the following frequency bands:

                (a)    1.7175 MHz to 1.7925 MHz;

               (b)    30.0625 MHz to 30.3125 MHz;

                (c)    39.7625 MHz to 40.250 MHz.

the Act means the Radiocommunications Act 1992.

         (2)   In this standard, a reference to an Australian/New Zealand Standard is a reference to the Standard as in force when this standard takes effect.

2A           Application

         (1)   This Standard applies to a radiocommunications device:

                (a)    that is a cordless telephone; and

               (b)    that is not a device mentioned in subsection (2).

Exception — device imported for significant event

         (2)   This subsection applies to a radiocommunications device that:

                (a)    is imported in Australia solely for use in connection with a significant event; and

               (b)    if required to be tested or inspected before it is used in Australia — meets the testing or inspection requirements; and

                (c)    if conditions or requirements are imposed on the use of the device in Australia — complies with those conditions or requirements; and

               (d)    is used in Australia only at the location of the significant event; and

                (e)    is used in Australia only for the duration of the significant event.

         (3)   In this section:

significant event means an event at a specified location or locations, notified on the website with the approval of the Chair.

3              Standard for performance — cordless telephone

         (1)   For paragraph 162 (1) (a) of the Act, a cordless telephone must not be capable of being operated, by itself or as part of a cordless telephone service, in a frequency band other than:

                (a)    in a cordless telephone frequency band; or

               (b)    in the range of frequencies mentioned in column 3 of the Schedule to the Radiocommunications Class Licence (Low Interference Potential Devices) No. 1 of 1993.

(2)For paragraph 162 (1) (a) of the Act, the standard for the performance of a cordless telephone that is capable of being operated in a cordless telephone frequency band is:

                (a)    the standard set out in Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4281:1995, other than:

   (i)    clause 1 of the standard (“Scope”); and

   (ii)    paragraph 5.4 (“Equipment markings”);

   to the extent to which the Australian Standard sets out requirements applicable in Australia; and

               (b)  the standard set out in those provisions of Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 3548 that are adopted or applied by Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4281:1995.

Note   Devices operating on a frequency band other than a cordless telephone frequency band may be subject to requirements specified in standards under the Telecommunications Act 1991 or in class licences made under the Radiocommunications Act 1992.

Note 1

The Radiocommunications Standard (Cordless Telephone) No. 1 of 1997 (in force under subsection 162 (1) of the Radiocommunications Act 1992) as shown in this compilation is amended as indicated in the Tables below.
