Citation
1. This Standard may be cited as Radiocommunications Standard (406 MHz Satellite Distress Beacons) No 1 of 1996.
[NOTE: This Standard takes effect on gazettal: see Radiocommunications Act 1992, s. 164.]
Definitions
2. In this Standard:
“406 MHz satellite distress beacon” means a device that:
(a) is known as a “satellite emergency position indicating radio beacon” or a “satellite personal locator beacon”; and
(b) is capable of being operated on the carrier frequency 406.025 MHz; and
(c) incorporates a homing transmitter the emissions of which are intended to facilitate search and rescue operations;
“homing transmitter” means an auxiliary homing transmitter that is capable of being operated on:
(a) the carrier frequency 121.5 MHz; or
(b) the carrier frequency 243 MHz; or
(c) the carrier frequencies of 121.5 MHz and 243 MHz;
“the Act” means the Radiocommunications Act 1992.
Standard for homing transmitter of a 406 MHz satellite distress beacon
3. (1) For paragraph 162 (1) (a) of the Act, the standard for the performance of the homing transmitter of a 406 MHz satellite distress beacon is the standard set out in the following provisions of Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4280:1995, as in force on 5 August 1995:
(a) clause 1.4.6 (the definition of “radiation”);
(b) clause 1.4.11 (the definition of “spurious emission”);
(c) clause 4.2.2.3 (“Homing compliance”);
(d) clause 4.2.3.2 (“Homing compliance”);
(e) section 4.3 (“Homing transmitter for 406 MHz satellite emergency position indicating radio beacon”), as modified in accordance with subclause (2);
(f) section 4.4 (“Homing transmitter for 406 MHz satellite personal locator beacon”), as modified in accordance with subclause (3);
(g) Appendix F (“Radiofrequency tests for the homer transmitter of 406 MHz satellite distress beacons (Normative)”).
[NOTE: Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4280:1995 was published by Standards Australia on 5 March 1995. The Standard was amended on 5 August 1995.]
(2) For the application of that Australian/New Zealand Standard, the Standard is modified as set out in the following Table.
TABLE
| Provision | Modification |
| clause 4.2.2.3 | Omit “In addition to the requirements of Clauses 4.2.1 and 4.2.2, a device”, substitute “A device” |
