POST AND TELEGRAPH RATES.

An Act to amend the Post and Telegraph Rates Act 1902–1918.
[Assented to 1st October, 1920.]
BE it enacted by the King’s Most Excellent
Majesty, the Senate, and the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of
Australia, as follows:—
Short title and citation.
1.—(1.) This Act may be cited as the Post and Telegraph Rates Act 1920.
(2.) The Post and Telegraph Rates Act 1902–1918 is in this Act
referred to as the Principal Act.
(3.) The
Principal Act, as amended by this Act, may be cited as the Post and Telegraph Rates Act 1902–1920.
Commencement.
2.This Act shall commence
on a day to be fixed by proclamation.
Rates to be paid on Goverment correspondence.
3.Section five of the
Principal Act is amended by omitting all words from and including the words “subject
to such regulations” to and inclusive of the words “Commonwealth Meteorological
Department”.
Repeal of section 6a.
4. Section six a of the Principal Act is hereby
repealed.
Newspapers.
5.Part I. of the First
Schedule to the Principal Act is omitted and the following Part inserted in its
stead:—
“Part I.—Newspapers.
On
all newspapers, printed and published in Australia, posted for delivery
within the Commonwealth (without condition as to the number contained in each
addressed wrapper) by—
| One
penny and a halfpenny per twenty ounces on the aggregate weight of newspapers
posted by any one person at any one time.
|
(a) the proprietors thereof to bonâ
fide subscribers and to newsvendors and agents for bonâ fide trade requirements;
|
(b) newsvendors and agents to bonâ fide subscribers and to other
newsvendors and agents for bonâ fide
trade requirements; and
|
(c) newsvendors and agents for return to the publishing office.
|
On
other newspapers posted within the Commonwealth for delivery therein
| For
each newspaper—One penny per ten ounces or part of ten ounces.”

6.Part
II. of the First Schedule to the Principal Act is repealed and the following
Part inserted in its stead:—

Repeal of Part III.—War Postage.
7.Part III. of the First
Schedule to the Principal Act is hereby repealed.
Ordinary Telegrams.
8.Part
I. of the Second Schedule to the Principal Act is repealed and the following
Part is inserted in its stead:—
“Part I.—Ordinary
Telegrams.

sending station.

(d) telegrams on the public service when
required, under section ninety-five of the Post
and Telegraph Act 1901–1916, to be transmitted before other telegrams.
The
foregoing rates are exclusive of porterage charges.”

9.Part
II. of the Second Schedule of the Principal Act is repealed and the following
Part is inserted in its stead:—

10.Part
III. of the Second Schedule to the Principal Act is repealed and the following
Parts are inserted in its stead:—

Telegrams, as Prescribed.
Including
address and signature, One shilling and threepence for the first thirty words
and one halfpenny for each additional word.
Double
the foregoing rate shall be charged for the transmission of letter telegrams on
Sunday, Christinas Day, and Good Friday.”
“Part IV.—Shipping
Telegrams.
Telegrams,
relating to the movements of shipping, sent by officers of the Commonwealth
Navigation and Lighthouse Services, for the purpose of being posted up at
telegraph offices—the same rates as are specified in division (b
