An Act to suspend for one year so much of an Act to declare the Town of Sydney to be a City and to incorporate the Inhabi tants thereof and so much of an Act to incorporate the Town of Melbourne as relates to the est imating and levying a Kate for the Police of the said City and Town respectively.

re ign of H e r present Majesty in t i tu led respectively " An Act to

" declare the Town of Sydney to be a City and to incorporate the

" Inhabitants thereof" and " An Act to incorporate the Inhabitants of

" the Town of Melbourne" it is amongs t o ther t h i n g s enacted t ha t in

order t o raise t h e a m o u n t necessary to provide for t he paymen t of such a n u m b e r of constables and such other police es tabl i shments wi th in t h e said city and town respectively as may from t ime to t ime in t h e opinion of t he Councils of t he said city and town be requi red the said Councils a re authorized and required once at least in every year to es t imate as correct ly as may be w h a t a m o u n t will be sufficient for

p a y m e n t of t h e salaries al lowances and rewards to be paid to such

constables and special constables and of all o the r expenses a t t end ing police purposes wi th in t h e said city and t o w n and in order to raise the a m o u n t so es t imated t he said Councils are by t h e said Acts author ized and required half-yearly to order a City Rate and Town Rate respectively to be m a d e and collected and for th i s purpose t h e said Councils shall have all and the l ike powers as are by t he said reci ted Ac t s vested in t h e m for m a k i n g and levying a City R a t e and Town R a t e respectively for o ther purposes a n d it is thereby fur ther enacted t h a t t he said ra tes respectively shall be called the "Po l i ce Rate' ' and t h e respective amoun t s w h e n collected shal l be paid to t h e Treasurers of t h e said Corporat ions who shal l keep separate accounts thereof unde r t h e n a m e of " Police F u n d " and from t ime to t ime pay out of t h e said Police F u n d s for t he suppor t of t he police or for police purposes such sums as they m a y be requi red or directed to pay by w a r r a n t s unde r t he hands of t h e Mayors of t h e said ci ty a n d t o w n respectively counters igned by the Town Clerk A n d whereas it is expedient to re ta in for t he present t he m a n a g e m e n t of t h e said police force in t h e h a n d s of t he Execu t ive Governmen t and to appropr ia te t h e a m o u n t necessary for the suppor t thereof from t h e Revenue of t h e said Colony receivable from taxes ra tes duties and imposts raised wi th in t h e same Be i t therefore enacted by H i s Excel lency t he Governor of N e w South W a l e s wi th the advice and consent of t h e Legis la t ive Council thereof Tha t so much of t h e said reci ted Ac t s as relates to t h e es t imat ing by t h e Councils of t h e said city and town respectively of t he amoun t necessary to provide for the paymen t of constables and other police es tabl i shments wi th in t he said city and town respectively and to the powers the reby vested in t he Councils of t he said city and town respectively for m a k i n g and levying t he said Police R a t e s shall be suspended and inoperat ive for one whole year from a n d after the first day of J a n u a r y in t he year of our Lord one thousand eight h u n d r e d and

forty-eight Provided always t h a t n o t h i n g heroin conta ined shall

affect or be const rued to affect any m a t t e r or t h i n g heretofore done or commenced to be done in pu r suance of t h e provisions of t h e said reci ted Acts or e i ther of t h e m .

2. A n d be i t enacted Tha t th i s Act shall commence and t ake

effect from and after t h e first day of J a n u a r y now nex t ensu ing	and
shall thenceforth cont inue in force for one whole year .
