An Ordinance to amend the Police Ordir.i

1927-1958.

1.—(1.) This Ordinance may be cited as the Police Short title

Ordinance I960 .* and citation.
(2 . ) The Police Ordinance 1927-1958,f as amended by
this Ordinance, may be cited as the Police Ordinance 1927-1960.
2 . Section five AA of the Police Ordinance 1927-1958 is

repealed and the following section inserted in its s tead:—

" 5 A A . — ( 1 . ) Unless the Minister, in a particular case, Appointments

otherwise directs, the appointment of a person as a member of p0roba°ion.
the Police Force shall be on probation for a period of twelve
months.

" (2 . ) After the period of twelve months on probation has expired the Minister may, after taking into consideration a report from the Commissioner—

(a) confirm or annul the appointment; or

(b) extend the period of probation for a further period

of six months.

" (3 . ) The Minister may, at any time during the extended period that a person is on probation and after taking into con- sideration a report from the Commissioner, annul the appoint- ment of the person.

" (4 . ) Where the Minister has extended the period of pro- bation of a person, he may, at any time during the extended period and after taking into consideration a report from the Commissioner, confirm the appointment of the person, but, if the Minister does not confirm the appointment during the extended period, he shall, after the extended period has expired, confirm or annul the appointment.

" (5 . ) Where the Minister annuls the appointment of a person under this section, the person shall cease to perform his duties as a member of the Police Force at such time as the Minister specifies in the instrument of annulment.

" (6.) Notwithstanding anything in this section, a member of the Police Force who has been appointed on probation remains on probation until his appointment has been confirmed or annulled.

" (7.) A reference in this Ordinance or any other law in force in the Territory to a member of the Police Force shall be read as including a reference to a member of the Police Force who has been appointed on probation under this section and whose appointment has not been confirmed or annulled.".

Application.

3. Notwithstanding the amendment made by the last preced- ing section, section five AA of the Police Ordinance 1927-1958 continues to apply to and in relation to a person who had been, before the commencement of this Ordinance, appointed on pro- bation as a member of the Police Force and whose appointment had not been confirmed or annulled under that section.
