AN ACT to amend the Nurses Registration Act,

1921-1946.

[Assented to 21st December, 1948.]

BE it enacted by the King's Most Excellent Majesty,by and with the advice and consent of the Legis- lative Council and Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

Short title.

1.

This Act may be cited as the Nurses Registration Act Amendment Act, 1948, and shall be read as one with the Nurses Registration Act, 1921-1946 (Act No. 7 of 1922 as reprinted pursuant to the Amendments Incor- poration Act, 1938, with amendments to and including Act No. 32 of 1939 incorporated, in Volume 2 of the Re- printed Acts of the Parliament of Western Australia, 1943, and further amended by Acts Nos. 14 of 1944 and 14 of 1946), hereinafter referred to as the principal Act.

3. Section one B of the principal Act is amended by

adding after the word "meaning" in line four of the definition, "Midwifery Nurse" a definition as follows:

"Mothercraft Nurse" means a nurse qualified as

prescribed to engage in mothercraft nursing.

4. Section three subsection (1) of the principal Act is

amended by

(a)

substituting for the word "six" in line six the

word "seven";

(b)

adding after paragraph (f) a paragraph as fol-

lows :-

(g) the names of those nurses who are qualified under this Act as mother- craft nurses.

Amendment

5. Section five of the principal Act is amended by

of s. 5.

(a)

substituting the word " eighteen" for the words "twenty-one" in line four of the proviso to subsection (5e);

(b)

adding after subsection (5c) a subsection as

follows :-

(5d) Every person who-

(i)    at the commencement of the training for mothereraft nursing is not less than seventeen years of age;

(ii)    has attained the general educational

standard prescribed;

(iii)    is of the health standard prescribed;

(iv)    has completed the prescribed course of not less than fifteen months training in mothercraft at a mothercraft nurses' training school approved for the purpose by the Commissioner of Public Health;

(v). has passed the prescribed examina-

tion

shall, on payment of the prescribed fee, be entitled to registration as a mothercraft nurse in that division of the register which relates to mother- craft nurses.

Amendment

of e. 6.

6. Section six of the principal Act is amended by

(a)

adding after the word "hospitals" in subsection

(1) line two, the words "and mothercraft

nurses' training schools as the case may be";

(b) substituting for the words and figure "and

(5c)" in subsection (3) line three the words

and figures " (5c) and (5d)".

7. Paragraph (a) of the proviso to subsection (1) of

section thirteen is amended by

(a) inserting after the words "tuberculosis nurse" in line two the words "or a registered mother- craft nurse";

(b) substituting for the words "or tuberculosis" in line three the words "tuberculosis or mother- craft".

8. Section sixteen of the principal Act is amended by adding after the word "effect" in paragraph (b) line seven the words "and without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing may make regulations

relating to the requirements which must be complied with in respect of any institution before it can be approved by the Commissioner of Public Health as a mothercraft nurses' training school for the purposes of this Act".
