REGULATIONS UNDER THE NORTHERN TERRITORY (ADMINISTRATION) ACT 1910-1968.*

WHEREAS by sub-section (1.) of section 4c of the Northern Territory (Administration) Act 1910-1968 it is provided, amongst other things, that for the purposes of the election of the elected members of the Legislative Council for the Territory, the Northern Territory of Australia shall be distributed into as many Electoral Districts as there are members to be elected:

AND WHEREAS by section 10 of the Northern Territory (Administration) Act (No. 2) 1968 it is provided that in the application of sub-section (1.) of section 4c of the Northern Territory (Administration) Act 1910-1968 to the general election of members of the Legislative Council of the Northern Territory of Australia next held after the Northern Territory (Administration) Act (No. 2) 1968 receives the Royal Assent the number of members to be elected shall be deemed to be eleven:

AND WHEREAS a general election of members of the Legislative Council of the Northern Territory of Australia has not yet been held since the Northern Territory (Administration) Act (No. 2) 1968 received the Royal Assent:

AND WHEREAS by section 4ca of the Northern Territory (Administration) Act 1910-1968 it is provided, amongst other things, that the boundaries of each Electoral District shall be as prescribed, after report to the Minister by a Distribution Committee appointed under section 4cc of that Act:

AND WHEREAS the Minister of State for the Interior has, in pursuance of section 4cb of the Northern Territory (Administration) Act 1910-1968 directed that a distribution of the Territory into Electoral Districts be made:

AND WHEREAS the Distribution Committee appointed under section 4cc of the Northern Territory (Administration) Act 1910-1968 has forwarded to the Minister of State for the Interior a report in accordance with section 4ch of that Act:

NOW THEREFORE I, the Governor-General in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the Northern Territory (Administration) Act 1910-1968.

NORTHERN TERRITORY ELECTORAL DISTRICTS REGULATIONS

Citation.

1.These Regulations may be cited as the Northern Territory Electoral Districts Regulations.

Repeal.

2. The Northern Territory Electoral Districts Regulations (being Statutory Rules 1965, No. 131) are repealed.

Interpretation.

3.—(1.) In these Regulations—

“North Australia Railway” means the railway between Darwin and Birdum;

“the Town of Alice Springs” means the land in the Territory described in Part I. of the Schedule to the Proclamation under the Crown Lands Ordinance 1931-1956 of the Territory published in the Gazette on the fourth day of April, One thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven.

(2.) In the Schedule to these Regulations—

(a)references to a Pastoral Homestead Lease shall be read as references to a Pastoral Homestead Lease continued in force by section 34 of the Crown Lands Ordinance (No. 2) 1967; and

(b)references to an Occupation (Development) licence shall be read as references to a licence, called an “Occupation (Development) licence”, granted under section 108 of the Crown Lands Ordinance 1931-1964 or of that Ordinance as amended at any time.

Boundaries of Electoral Districts.

4.For the purposes of the election of members of the Legislative Council referred to in paragraph (b)of sub-section (2.) of section 4 of the Northern Territory (Administration) Act 1910-1968—

(a)the Electoral Districts referred to in section 4c of that Act shall be known as the Electoral District of Nightcliff, the Electoral District of Fannie Bay, the Electoral District of Port Darwin, the Electoral District of Ludmilla, the Electoral District of McMillan, the Electoral District of Arnhem, the Electoral District of Elsey, the Electoral District of Barkly, the Electoral District of Victoria River, the Electoral District of Alice Springs and the Electoral District of Stuart, respectively; and

(b)the boundaries of each of those Electoral Districts are the boundaries respectively set out in the Schedule to these Regulations in relation to that Electoral District.
