| Preamble. | TTTH EREA S, in accordance with the provisions of the Public |
Works Act, 1900, the Legislative Assembly did, by resolution, declare that it Avas expedient to carry out a certain work, namely, the construction of sewerage works for Newcastle and suburbs, provided the sewage be discharged south of the proposed outfall at or near the Merewether Gulf, and that the municipal districts of Adamstown and Waratah he included in the scheme : And whereas on the passing of the said resolution a statutory duty Avas by the said Act imposed on the Secretary for Public Works to introduce a Bill into the said Assembly to sanction the carrying out of the said work : Be it therefore enacted by the King’s Most Excellent Majesty, by and Avith tbc advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly of New South Wales in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as folloAVS :—

the time being performing the duties of the said Secretary, is lierchy authorised to undertake and cai’ry out the said work, subject to the provisions of this Act, and for that purpose shall he, and shall have the powers and duties of, a Constructing Authority within the meaning of the Public Works Act, 1900, and shall, for the purposes of carrying out and completing the said AVork, have the poAvers conferred on the Minister by the Hunter District Water Supply and ScAverage Act of 1892, and any Acts amending the same, for carrying out and completing any approved scheme of scAverage for Avhich executive authority has been giA'cn. But section forty-five of the llunter District Water Supply and Seiverage Act Amendment Act, 1897, shall not apply in respect of the said Avork.
3. The plan of the said work is the plan marked “ Sewerage pian of work.
Works for NcAA'castleand Suburbs,” signed by the Secretary for Public Works and countersigned by the Principal Engineer for Water Supply and ScAverage, and deposited in the public oiSce of the said Secretary.
4. The cost of carrying out the said work, estimated at one Costs, how to be
hundred and eighty-three thousand four hundred and forty-four pounds, may be defrayed from such loan votes as are noAV or may hereafter he applicable to that purpose, and shall not under any circumstances exceed the estimated cost by more than ten per centum.

SCHEDULE.
Sewerage and drainage works, Newcastle and suhurhs, in the parish o f Newcastle, county

1. Tlie construction of main outfall sewer from Mclville-street, near Ilopkins- Btreet, to Merewether Gulf, a distance of about one mile three and a half chains, together with all shafts, manholes, penstock chambers, tidal flaps, ventilating shafts and pipes, and all works incidental thereto, marked in long and short broken red lines on plan.
2. The construction of Newcastle city main sewer and branch, and Merewether sub-branch, of about two miles thirty-seven and a half chains in length, together with all shafts, manholes, ventilating shafts and ])ipes, ])enstock and inlet chambers, and all works incidental thereto marked in red on plan.
3. The construction of the Newcastle city low-lcwcl sower, and including Uamilton
and Adamstown main branches, Wickham main branch and sub-branches, and Wickham
Park low-level sewers, in all about eight miles five chains in length, together with

pumping stations, numbers one to five, shafts, manholes, ventilating shafts and pipes, flushing chambers, interception chambers, gullies, overflows, and all works incidental thereto marked in broken red lines on plan.
4. The construction of about twenty-si.v miles of reticulating pipe sewers> together with manholes, gullies, ventilating shafts and pipes, penstocks, intercepting and flushing chambers, and all works incidental thereto and necessary for the proper feeding of the main and branch sewers above referred to.
5. The construction of about two miles fourteen chains of cast-iron rising mains, together with the Carrington pumping stations, numbers six and seven, and all manholes, gullies, cleaning-boxes, reflux-valves, and all other works incidental thereto, and marked in blue on plan.
G. The construction of the generating and pumping plant, together with all poles, conduits, manholes, cables and wires in connection with the distributing mains, .and all other works incidental thereto. The pumping stations are shown in red on plan and marked numbers one to seven.
7. The construction of about thirteen miles of sew'ers, and cast-iron rising mains, together with the Waratah pumping station, and .all manholes, gullies, overflow’s, cleaning boxes, reflux valves, and all other works incidental thereto, including the .treatment works necessary for effectually dealing with the sewage from Waratah.
Tho works above described are subject to such deviations and modifications of route, and to such alterations, omissions, or extension as may hereafter be deemed necessary: Provided always that the tot.al cost of such W'orks, together with tho deviations referred to, shall not exceed tho estimated cost, one hundi’ed and eighty-three thousand four hundred and forty-four pounds, by more than ten per centum.
