An Act to sanction the carrying out of cer­ tain works of Harbour Improvements at Newcastle; and for other purposes. [\2th November, 1895.]

Preamble.

ITTH B REA S, in accordance witli the provisions of the Puhlic VV Works Act of 18S8, the Legislative Assembly did, hy rc.solu-

tion, declare that it was expedient that a certain work, namely, works of harbour improvements at Newcastle, as referred hy the said A ssembly to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works, should he carried out with sucii of the modifications recommended hy tlio said Committee as the said Assembly might thereafter determine : And whereas on the passing of the said resolution a statutory duty was by the said Act imposed on tlie Secretary for Puhlic Works to introduce a Bill into the said Assembly to sanction the carrying out of the said work: Be it therefore enacted hy the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legisla­ tive Council and Legislativi; Assembly of New Sonth AVales in Parliament assembled, andhy the authority of the same, as follows :—■

Work saticlionetl.

1. The carrying out of the said work (more particularly described m the Scliedule to this Act) is hereby sanctioned ; and the Secretary for Puhlic M^orks, or the Member of the Executive Council for the time being performing the duties of the said Secretary, is hereby authorised to undertake and carry out the said work subject to the provisions of this_ Act, and for that purpose shall be, and shall have the powers and duties of, a Constructing Authority ivithin the meaning of the Public "Works Act of 1888.

Plan of work.

'Jj. The plan of the said work is the plan marked “ Newcastle Harbour Improvements,” signed hy the Secretary for Puhlic "Works and countersigned hy the Engineer-in-Chief for Puhlic Works, and deposited in the puhlic office of the said Secretary.

8. The cost of carrying out the said work, estimated at one hundred and forty thousand pounds, may he defrayed from such Loan Votes as are now or may hereafter he applicable to tliat purpose, and shall not under any circumstances exceed the estimated cost hy more than ten per centnm.

Short title.

4. This Act may be cited as the “ Newcastle Harbour Improve­

ments Act, 1895.”

SCHEDULE.

Improvements to the entrance to Newcastle Harbour in the counties of Northumberland

and Gloucester.

1. The eonstruction of a breakwater on the northern side of the entrance to Newcastle harbour, commencing at a point near the foot of Clyde-streot, on the ocean side of the town of Stockton, and e.xtending a distance of three thousand feet on a lino curving from a south-easterly to a north-easterly direction, and marked “ northern breakwater, fir.st section,” on plan.

2. The construction of a training wall on the sotithcrn side of the entrance to Newcastle harbour, commencing at a point near the boat harbour, at the foot of Signal Hill, city of Newcastle, and extending a distance of one thousand foot on a curved line in a north-easterly direction, and marked " south guide wall” on plan.

d. The construction of repair.s to the outer end of the existing southern break­ water for a distance of two hundred feet, and marked ‘‘ repairs to southern breakwater ” on plan.

4. The construction of an extension of the existing southern breakwater bevond the above-<lescribed repaired portion a distance of three hundred feet, and marked “ extension of southern breakwater” on plan.
