REGULATIONS UNDER THE NAVIGATION ACT 1912-1970.*

I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the Navigation Act 1912-1970.

Amendments of the Navigation (Fire Appliances) Regulations  

Water Pressure.

1. Regulation 13 of the Navigation (Fire Appliances) Regulations is amended—

(a) by omitting sub-regulation (1.) and inserting in its stead the following sub-regulation:—

“(1.) The water pressure created by any two of the fire pumps with which a ship is furnished when those pumps are operating simultaneously shall be such that, when any of the fire hoses and nozzles with which the ship is furnished are coupled to any adjacent fire hydrants in the ship and the fire hoses so coupled are, between them, delivering water at a rate equal to the pumping capacity required by these Regulations for the two fire pumps, the water pressure at every fire hydrant in the ship is not less than—

(a) in the case of a ship of 4,000 tons or over—45 pounds per square inch; and

(b) in the case of a ship of less than 4,000 tons—40 pounds per square inch.”; and

(b) byadding at the end thereof the following sub-regulation:—

“(3.) The reference in sub-regulation (1.) of this regulation to the pumping capacity required by these Regulations for the two fire pumps shall be read as a reference to the sum of the minimum pumping capacities that the two fire pumps are required to have in accordance with regulation 23 of these Regulations.”.

Water pressure.

2. Regulation 26 of the Navigation (Fire Appliances) Regulations is amended—

(a) by omitting sub-regulation (1.) and inserting in its stead the following sub-regulation:—

“(1.) The water pressure created by any two of the fire pumps with which a ship is furnished when those pumps are operating simultaneously shall be such that, when any of the fire hoses and nozzles with which the ship is furnished are coupled to any adjacent

fire hydrants in the ship and the fire hoses so coupled are, between them, delivering water at a rate equal to the pumping capacity required by these Regulations for the two fire pumps or 140 tons per hour, whichever is the lesser rate, the water pressure at every fire hydrant in the ship is not less than—

(a) in the case of a ship of 6,000 tons or over—40 pounds per square inch; and

(b) in the case of a ship of less than 6,000 tons—37 pounds per square inch.”; and

(b) b y adding at the end thereof the following sub-regulation:—

“(3.) The reference in sub-regulation (1.) of this regulation to the pumping capacity required by these Regulations for the two fire pumps shall be read as a reference to the sum of the minimum pumping capacities that the two fire pumps are required to have in accordance with regulation 38 of these Regulations.”.
