REGULATIONS UNDER THE NAVIGATION ACT 1912-1942.*

I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the Navigation Act 1912-1942.

AMENDMENTS OF THE NAVIGATION (COMPASS) REGULATIONS. 

1. Regulation 14 of the Navigation (Compass) Regulations is repealed and the following regulation inserted in its stead :

Application for

licence.

" 14. Subject to these Regulations, a person shall be eligible to licensed as an adjuster of compasses if he submits an application accordance with Form C8, accompanied by—

(a) the applicant's certificate of competency;

(b) satisfactory evidence of the applicant's good conduct and character during the twelve months immediately preceding the date of his application ; and

(c) unless, at any time during the three years immediately preceding the date of his application, the applicant held a licence as adjuster of compasses issued under these Regulations-

(i) deviation cards for at least twelve ships, the compasses of which the applicant has, while holding the qualifications specified in paragraph (a) or (b)of sub-regulation (1.) of regulation 12 of these Regulations, assisted in adjusting during the three years immediately preceding the date of his application, showing in each case the position of the correctors and endorsed by the adjuster, over the adjuster's signature, to the effect that the applicant assisted in the adjustments; or

(ii) satisfactory evidence that the applicant has, while holding the qualifications specified in paragraph (a) or paragraph (b) of sub-regulation (1.) of regulation 12 of these Regulations, practised as a compass adjuster in any part of the King's

dominions and adjusted the compasses of at least twelve ships during the three years immediately preceding the date of his application.".

Fee for adjustment

2. Regulation 17 of the Navigation (Compass) Regulations is amended—

(a) by omitting sub-regulation (1.) and inserting in its stead  the following sub regulation :—

" (1.) Subject to this regulation, the fee payable for the services of an adjuster of compasses shall be the amount specified, according to the gross registered tonnage of the ship, in the following table :—

(b)by omitting from sub-regulation (3.) the words "Ten shillings and sixpence " and inserting in their stead the words " One pound one shilling "; and

(c) by omitting from the proviso to that sub-regulation the symbols and figures " £2 2s." and inserting in their stead the words " Four pounds four shillings ".

The Schedule

3. The Schedule to the Navigation (Compass) Regulations is amended--

(a) by omitting from Form C8 the words " I also submit deviation cards as required by the Regulations." and inserting in their stead the words—

" I also submit

deviation cards

evidence of practice as a compass adjuster

as required by regulation 14 of the Navigation (Compass) Regulations.

(b) by omitting from Form C9 the words " prescribed fee* " and inserting in their stead the word " fee "; and

(c) by omitting from that Form all the words and figures from and including the words—

to the end of the Form.
