Navigation (Compass) Regulations 1944 (Amendment) (Cth)
STATUTORY RULES.
REGULATIONS UNDER THE NAVIGATION ACT 1912-1956.*
I,
THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the
advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations
under the

Amendments of the Navigation (Compass) Regulations.
“6.—(1.) Subject to this regulation, a ship shall be provided with—
(
a ) a magnetic compass for use as a steering compass sited on the centre line of the ship at the normal steering position;(
b )a magnetic compass for use as a standard compass sited on the centre line of the ship in a position near the normal steering position from which the view of the horizon is least obstructed; and(
c ) where an alternative steering position is provided—a magnetic compass sited on the centre line of the ship at that alternative steering position.
“(2.)
A compass is not required to be provided in a ship in pursuance of paragraph (
(
a ) the compass provided in the ship in pursuance of paragraph (b ) of that sub-regulation—(i) is of the reflector or projector type;
(ii) can be read from the normal steering position; and

(iii) where a compass is provided in the ship in pursuance of paragraph (
c ) of the last preceding sub-regulation—is interchangeable with that compass; and(
b )a gyroscopic compass is provided in the ship, being a compass a card of which, or a card of a repeater of which, can be read from the normal steering position.
“(3.)
The compass, if any, provided in a ship in pursuance of paragraph (
“(4.) There shall be provided in a ship in which only one magnetic compass is carried a spare compass bowl and card.
“(5.)
Where the Director is satisfied, in the case of a ship of less than five
hundred tons gross registered tonnage, that it is unnecessary to provide more
than one compass in the ship, he may, by writing under his hand, exempt the
ship from the requirement of paragraph (
“6a.—(1.) Subject to the next succeeding sub-regulation, every magnetic compass in a ship shall be mounted on a binnacle.
“(2.) The alternative steering compass of a ship may be mounted on a pedestal.
“6b. A magnetic compass provided in a ship for use as a standard compass in pursuance of these Regulations shall be furnished with appliances for the taking of accurate observations and bearings.”.
(
a ) by omitting the proviso; and(
b ) by adding at the end thereof the following sub-regulation:—“(2.) The compasses of a ship in respect of which an exemption is in force under the last preceding sub-regulation shall, from time to time, be examined, and, where necessary, adjusted, by an adjuster of compasses but so that the period between two successive examinations shall not exceed two years or, in a special case, such additional period, not exceeding three months, as the Deputy Director permits.”.
