I, WILLIAM PATRICK DEANE, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, make the following Regulations under the Naval Defence Act 1910.

1Name of Regulations

 These Regulations are the Naval Forces Amendment Regulations 1999 (No. 1).

2Commencement

 These Regulations commence on 1 December 1999.

3Amendment of Naval Forces Regulations 1935

Schedule 1 amends the Naval Forces Regulations 1935.

  • (2)

    For section 17 of the Act, the age for the compulsory retirement of a sailor in the Naval Reserve is 60 years.

  • (3)

    However, subregulation (2) does not apply to a sailor who was a member of the Naval Reserve on 30 November 1999 if the sailor elects, in accordance with subregulation (4), to adopt the retirement age of 55 years.

  • (4)

    An election for the purposes of subregulation (3) must be:

    • (a)

      in writing; and

    • (b)

      signed by the sailor; and

     (c)  delivered to the Chief of Navy not later than 1 June 2000.
