REGULATIONS UNDER THE NATIONAL HEALTH ACT 1953-1958.*

I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the National Health Act 1953-1958.

Amendments of the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Regulations. 

Commencement.

1. These Regulations shall come into operation on the first day of August, 1959.

Pharmaceutical benefits that may be prescribed only for specified diseases or purposes.

2. Regulation 11 of the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Regulations is amended by omitting from sub-regulation (2.) the words and figures "item 16, 37, 49 or 53" and inserting in their stead the words and figures "item 1, 10, 16, 37, 49 or 53".

3. After regulation 11 of the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Regulations the following regulation is inserted in Part III.:—

Persons excepted from entitlement to receive certain forms of pharmaceutical benefits.

"11a. A person who has attained the age of six years is not entitled to receive a general pharmaceutical benefit (other than item 5 in the Second Schedule) which is in an oral suspension form or in granule form.".

Writing of prescriptions.

4. Regulation 17 of the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Regulations is amended by omitting from sub-regulation (4.) the word and figures "or 71" and inserting in their stead the word and figures", 71 or 76".

Supply of pharmaceutical benefits on prescriptions.

5. Regulation 20 of the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Regulations is amended by omitting from sub-regulation (2.) the word and figures "or 71" and inserting in their stead the word and figures", 71 or 76".

Supply of pharmaceutical benefit before surrender of written prescription.

6. Regulation 21 of the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Regulations is amended by omitting from sub-regulations (2.) and (4.) the word and figures "or 71" (wherever occurring) and inserting in their stead the word and figures ", 71 or 76".

First Schedule.

7. The First Schedule to the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Regulations is amended by adding at the end thereof the following items:—

Second Schedule.

8. The Second Schedule to the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits) Regulations is amended—

(a)by omitting item 9;

(b)by adding at the end of item 11, in the column headed

"Disease or Purpose", the following words:—

"Bronchiectasis

Fibrocystic diseases of the pancreas";

(c) by adding at the end of item 12, in the column headed

"Disease or Purpose" the following words:—

"Type II nephritis

Cushings syndrome including hyperadrenocorticalism

Progressive or continuing hepatitis proven by biopsy or biochemistry";

(d)by omitting item 15 and inserting in its stead the following item:—

Deoxycortone Acetate

Addison's disease

Total adrenalectomy";

(e)by omitting items 20, 21, 32, 40 and 56;

(f) by omitting item 71 and inserting in its stead the following item:—

Corticotrophin............................

Status asthmaticus

(g) by adding at the end thereof the following items:—
