REGULATIONS UNDER THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE ACT 1948-1949.*

I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the National Health Service Act 1948-1949.

Amendments of the National Health (Medicines for Pensioners) Regulations.

Definitions.

1. Regulation 5 of the National Health (Medicines for Pensioners) Regulations is amended by inserting in sub-regulation (1.), after the definition of “prescription”, the following definition:—

“‘the British Pharmacopoeia 1948’ means the edition known as the 1948 edition of the book called the British Pharmacopoaeia published under the direction of the General Council of Medical Education and Registration of the United Kingdom as amended by the 1951 Addendum to that book;”.

Pensioner benefits.

2. Regulation 7 of the National Health (Medicines for Pensioners) Regulations is amended—

(a)by omitting sub-regulation (1.), and inserting in its stead the following sub-regulation:—

“(1.) Subject to this regulation, the pensioner benefits referred to in these Regulations are—

(a)the drugs and preparations covered by monograph in the British Pharmacopoeia 1953;

(b)the drugs and preparations covered, by monograph in the British Pharmacopoeia 1948 and not covered by monograph in the British Pharmacopoeia 1953;

(c) the drugs and preparations specified in the Schedule to these Regulations; and

(d)medicinal compounds composed of two or more of the drugs or preparations referred to in the last three paragraphs,

other than—

(e) medicinal gases;

(f) diamorphine hydrochloride;

(g)preparations containing diamorphine hydrochloride; or

(h)drugs or compounds consisting wholly of drugs specified in the Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Formulary prescribed under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Act 1947-1952.”; and

(b)by inserting in sub-regulation (3.), after the words “paragraph (a)”, the words “or (b)”.

The Schedule.

3. The Schedule to the National Health (Medicines for Pensioners) Regulations is repealed and the following Schedule inserted in its stead:—

THE SCHEDULE.

Regulation 7.

PENSIONER BENEFITS ADDITIONAL TO THOSE COVERED BY MONOGRAPH IN THE BRITISH PHARMACOPOEIA 1953 AND IN THE BRITISH PHARMACOPOEIA 1948.

1. The use in this Schedule, in relation to an item, of the letters “A.P.F.” indicates that that item is to conform to the standards of purity required in respect of that item by the latest edition for the time being of the book called the Australian and New Zealand Pharmaceutical Formulary published by the Australian and New Zealand Pharmaceutical Association or, if that edition has been added to or amended, that edition as affected by those additions or amendments.

2. Where an item is not an item in relation to which the letters “A.P.F.” are used that item is to conform to the standards of purity required by the latest edition for_ the time being, of the book called the British Pharmaceutical Codex published by direction of the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, or, if that edition has been added to or amended, by that edition as affected by those additions or amendments.
