Motor Traffic (Amendment) Ordinance (No. 2) 1984

An Ordinance to amend the Motor Traffic Ordinance 1936

Short title

1.  This Ordinance may be cited as the Motor Traffic (Amendment) Ordinance (No. 2) 1984.1

Commencement

2.  This Ordinance shall come into operation on such date as is fixed by the Minister of State for Territories and Local Government by notice in the Gazette.

Principal Ordinance

3.  In this Ordinance, “Principal Ordinance” means the Motor Traffic Ordinance 1936.2

Interpretation

4.  Section 112K of the Principal Ordinance is amended by adding at the end of sub-section (1) the following definition:

“ ‘roundabout’ means a junction or intersection of public streets, or that part of a junction or intersection of public streets, that is designed for the movement of traffice in a clockwise direction around a traffic island located within the junction or intersection.”.

5.  Section 122 of the Principal Ordinance is amended—

(a)by inserting in paragraph (a) “, or has entered,” after “is approaching”; and

(b)by inserting in paragraph (b) “, or has entered,” after “is approaching”.

6.  Section 124 of the Principal Ordinance is amended—

(a)by omitting paragraph (1) (a) and substituting the following paragraphs:

“(a)a motor vehicle upon a public street is approaching, or has entered, a junction or intersection of that public street and another public street;

(aa)the junction or intersection is a junction or intersection at, near or within which there is erected a traffic sign bearing the words ‘GIVE WAY’ and facing in the direction from which the motor vehicle is approaching, or entered, the junction or intersection;’; and

(b)by inserting in paragraph (1) (b) “, or has entered,” after “is approaching”.

7.  After section 124 of the Principal Ordinance the following section is inserted:

“12A.  Where—

(a)a motor vehicle upon a public street is approaching a roundabout at or near which there is erected a ROUNDABOUT sign facing in the direction from which the motor vehicle is approaching;

(b)another vehicle is being driven within the roundabout and is approaching that motor vehicle from the right; and

(c)the circumstances are such that there is a reasonable possibility that the vehicles might collide or that a dangerous situation might otherwise be created,

the driver of the motor vehicle referred to in paragraph (a) shall allow the other vehicle to pass in front of him.”.

8.  Section 128 of the Principal Ordinance is amended—

(a)by omitting from paragraph (1) (b) “at or near the junction” and substituting “at, near or within the junction”;

(b)by inserting in paragraph (2) (a) “or after entering” after “approaching”;

(c)by inserting in paragraph (2) (b) “, or has entered,” after “approaching”; and

(d)by omitting from paragraph (2) (c) “into the intersection” and substituting “into, or were to proceed further within, the junction or intersection”.

9.  Schedule 4 to the Principal Ordinance is amended by adding at the end thereof the following item:
