AN ORDINANCE

To amend the Motor Traffic Ordinance 1936-1957, as

amended by the Motor Traffic Ordinance 1958.

I THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL in and over the Common-, wealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Ordinance under
the Seat of Government (Administration) Act 1910-1955.

MOTOR TRAFFIC ORDINANCE (NO. 2) 1958.

1.—(1.) This Ordinance may be cited as the Motor Traffic short taie

Ordinance (No. 2) 1958.* and citation.

(2 . ) The Motor Traffic Ordinance 1936-1957,f as amended by the Motor Traffic Ordinance 1958,J is in this Ordinance referred to as the Principal Ordinance.

(3 . ) Section one of the Motor Traffic Ordinance 1958 is

amended by omitting sub-section ( 2 . ) .

(4 . ) The Principal Ordinance, as amended by this Ordi- nance, may be cited as the Motor Traffic Ordinance

1936-1958.

2 . Section four of the Principal Ordinance is amended by Interpretation,

inserting in sub-section (1.), after the definition of " repealed

Ordinance ", the following definition:—

" ' school crossing ' means a portion of the carriageway

of a public street—

(a) between two lines marked or painted
across or partly across the carriage-

way so that no point on one line

is less than eight feet or more than sixteen feet from the nearest point on the other line; and

(b)

on or near which there is, for the time being, placed or displayed a flag or a sign bearing the words ' SCHOOL CROSSING' ;".

Driving on 3. Section fifty-six of the Principal Ordinance is amended—
public streets,

&c.

(a) by inserting in paragraph (q) of sub-section (1.), after the words " pedestrian crossing " (wherever occurring), the words "or school crossing"; and

(b) by inserting after paragraph (q) of sub-section

(1.) the following paragraph:—

" (qa) refrain from driving his vehicle upon a school crossing while a pedestrian is upon the school crossing; ".

4. After section one hundred and two A of the Principal

Ordinance the following section is inserted:—

" (2.) A person shall not place or display, on or near a
portion of the carriageway of a public street, a flag or sign
indicating or implying that the portion of the carriageway is a
class of persons, authorized under the last preceding sub-section school crossing unless he is a person, or a person included in a
or is acting under the direction of such a person.".
