His Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, has made the following Regulation under the Motor Traffic Act 1909.

Explanatory note
The object of this Regulation is to increase, over public holiday long weekends, the number of demerit points applying to offences under the "points system" of licence cancellation:
(a) by doubling the demerit points applying to speeding offences. and (b) by increasing the number of demerit points applying to other offences by one point. This Regulation is made under the Motor Traffic Act 1909, and. in particular, under sections 3 ( l ) (m1) and 11AB (Suspension or cancellation of drivers' licences by the Authority).

Points) Regulation 1998.
2 Commencement
This Regulation commences on 25 September 1998.
Amendment of Motor Traffic Regulations 1935
The Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 are amended as set out in
Schedule 1.

Regulation 1 OB Demerit points Omit "public holiday period occurring before 30 June 1998” from
Regulation 10B (9) and (10) wherever occurring.Insert instead “long weekend”.
Omit the clause. Insert instead: Regulation 10B (11)
( 1) In clauses (9) and (10), over a long weekend means: if a Friday has been declared a public holiday throughout the State—on or after the Thursday immediately before that Friday but before the Monday immediately after it, or if a Monday has been declared a public holiday throughout the State—on or after the Friday immediately before that Monday but before the Tuesday immediately after it. or
throughout the State—on or after the Thursday Monday have been declared public holidays if both a Friday and the immediately following immediately before that Friday but before the
Tuesday immediately after it.
