The Parliament of Australia enacts:

1Short title

This Act may be cited as the Medicare Levy Amendment Act 1998.

2Commencement

1. (1)

   Subject to subsection (2), this Act is taken to have commenced on 1 July 1997.

2. (2)

   Items 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8 of Schedule 1 are taken to have commenced on 1 July 1997, immediately after the commencement of Part 2 of Schedule 1 to, and Schedule 2 to, the Medicare Levy Amendment Act (No. 1) 1997.

3Schedule(s)

Subject to section 2, each Act that is specified in a Schedule to this Act is amended or repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule concerned, and any other item in a Schedule to this Act has effect according to its terms.

Schedule 1—Amendment of the Medicare Levy Act 1986

Application

The amendments made by this Schedule apply for the financial year commencing on 1 July 1997 and all later financial years.
