14.3.3 The master of a ship must ensure that, if the observations for a standard magnetic compass on the ship show an excessive deviation, the compass is adjusted by a licensed compass adjuster at the next port where an adjuster is available, to correct the deviation.
This is a penal provision.

14.3.9 For this provision:
appropriate intervals means at least once on each watch.
excessive deviation means for a standard magnetic compass, the deviation of the compass on a heading is more than 5°.
Note A deviation may be permanently or temporarily excessive after an event, eg if a ship has been laid up for a long period, structural alterations, grounding, structural damage caused by fire, being hit by lightning, passing an area of magnetic anomaly or carrying a cargo of ferromagnetic materials that are magnetised or may become magnetically induced.
