passing of the said resolution, a statutory duty was by the said Act imposed on the Secretary for Public Works to introduce a Bil l into the said Assembly to sanction the carrying out of the said work : B e
it therefore enacted by the King's Most Excellent Majesty, by and
with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Legislative
Assembly of New South Wales in Parliament assembled, and by the
authority of the same, as follows:—
1. This Act may be cited as the " Long Bay Disposal of Sewage
Act, 1908 . " 2. The carrying out of the works, more particularly described
in the Schedule to this Act, is hereby sanctioned, and the Secretary
for Public Works, or the member of the Executive Council for the
time being performing the duties of the said Secretary, is hereby authorised to undertake and carry out the said works, subject to the provisions of this Act, and for that purpose shall be and shall have the powers and duties of a Constructing Authority within the meaning of the Public Works Act, 1900.
3. The plan of the said works is the plan marked " The Western, Southern, lllawarra, and Botany Districts Sewage Disposal
Works," signed by the Secretary for Public Works, and countersigned by the Chief Engineer for Bivers, Water Supply, and Drainage, and
deposited in the public office of the said Secretary.
4 . The cost of carrying: out the said works, estimated at four
hundred and fifty-two thousand four hundred pounds, may be defrayed from such Loan Votes as are now, or may hereafter be, applicable to that purpose; and shall not, under any circumstances, exceed the estimated cost by more than ten per centum.
SCHEDULE.
THE construction of six miles thirty-four chains, more or less, of gravitation sewer, together with manholes, ventilating shafts, silt-pits, and screening chambers, works at
outfall, and all works incidental to the scheme and necessary for its proper completion. Commencing at the end of the existing carrier of the Western and lllawarra Suburbs
sewerage scheme on the Botany Sewage Farm, and constructed from thence in an easterly direction across that farm to Cook's River ; thence under that river by an inverted syphon; thence again in a generally easterly direction by means of embankments, aqueducts, cuttings, and tunnels, to an air-shaft near the ocean, at a rocky headland on the north side of Long Bay,—the sewer to be laid on a grade of one in three thousand
six hundred and fifty to this air-shaft; thence by two short-forked tunnels laid on a
grade to discharge through the submerged cliff into the ocean, with soffits of sewers attwenty feet below high-water spring tides.

The construction of twenty-three chains, more or less, of gravitation sewer from
existing southern outfall sewer at Botany, and near Cook's River, to connect with main
gravitation sewer; together with all manholes, screening and silt-pits, ventilating shafts,
and works incidental thereto.
The construction of a pumping station, sewers, screening chambers and silt-pits,
ventilating shafts, and all works incidental thereto, for dealing with Botany trade wastes.
The works above described are subject to such deviations and modifications as
may be deemed necessary.
