AN ORDINANCE

To amend the Legal Practitioners Ordinances 1970

LEGAL PRACTITIONERS ORDINANCE 1971

1.—(1.) This Ordinance may be cited as the Legal Practitioners

Ordinance 1971.*

(2.) The Legal Practitioners Ordinances 1970| is in this Ordinance

referred to as the Principal Ordinance.

(3.) The Principal Ordinance, as amended by this Ordinance, may

be cited as the Legal Practitioners Ordinance 1970-1971.

2.  Section 70 of the Principal Ordinance is amended—

(a) by omitting sub-section (1.) and inserting in its stead the following sub-section:—

" (1.) In this Division, a reference to the notional amount standing to the credit of the general trust bank account of a solicitor on the day immediately preceding the date fixed for the purposes of sub-section (1.) of the next succeeding section shall be read as a reference to the lowest amount that stood to the credit of that account at any time during the period of six months immediately preceding that date.";

(b)

by omitting sub-section (3.) and inserting in its stead the following sub-section:—

" (3.) In relation to the period commencing on the date fixed for the purposes of sub-section (1. ) of the next suc­ ceeding section and ending on the next succeeding thirty- first day of March, the provisions of this Ordinance apply as if that period were a year."; and

(c) by omitting paragraph (a) of sub-section (6.) and insert­ ing in its stead the following paragraph:—

" (a) in the period of six months immediately before the date fixed for the purposes of sub-section (1. ) of the next succeeding section; or ".

3.   Section 71 of the Principal Ordinance is amended—

(a) by omitting sub-section (1.) and inserting in its stead the following sub-section:—

" (1. ) Subject to this Division, where the notional amount standing to the credit of the general trust bank account kept by a solicitor on the day immediately preced­ ing a date fixed by the Attorney-General for the purposes of this sub-section is not less than Three thousand dollars, the solicitor is under an obligation to deposit, within one month after that date, with the Inspector for the purposes of the Statutory Deposits Trust Account an amount which is equal to one-half of that notional amount."; and

(b) by adding at the end thereof the following sub-section:—
" (4. ) The last two preceding sub-sections do not apply

to or in relation to a year that ends before the date fixed for

the purposes of sub-section (1. ) of this section.".
