An Ordinance to amend the Juries Ordinance 1967

Short title

1.  This Ordinance may be cited as the Juries (Amendment) Ordinance 1984.1

Principal Ordinance

2.  In this Ordinance, “Principal Ordinance” means the Juries Ordinance 1967.2

3.  After section 18 of the Principal Ordinance the following section is inserted in Part III:

Lengthy trial—relief from jury service

“18A.  (1)  At the conclusion of a criminal trial, the Judge may, if he is of the opinion that the trial was of sufficient length to justify his doing so, order that each of the jurors for that trial shall be excused from serving as a juror for a specified period.

“(2)  The Sheriff shall—

(a)make a notation of an order under sub-section (1) on the jury list next to the name of each person to whom the order relates; and

(b)notify, in writing, that person of the making of the order.

“(3)  During a period specified in an order under sub-section (1) —

(a)the name of a person to whom the order relates shall, for the purposes of this Ordinance, be deemed to be not included in the jury list; and

(b)that person is not liable to be summoned or appointed to attend to serve as a juror.”.

4.  Section 19 of the Principal Ordinance is amended by adding at the end thereof the following sub-section:

“(9)  A reference in sub-section (2) or (8) to a person who is exempt from serving as a juror shall not be read as including a reference to a person to whom an order under sub-section 18A (1) relates.”.
