Ordinance under the Seat of Government (Administration) Act 1910.

An Ordinance to amend the Interpretation Ordinance 1967

Short title

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Interpretation (Amendment)

Ordinance 1982.1

Principal Ordinance

2. In this Ordinance, "Principal Ordinance" means the Interpretation

Ordinance 1967.2

3. Before section 12 of the Principal Ordinance the following section is

inserted in Division 1 of Part III:

" 11 A. (1) In the interpretation of a provision of an Ordinance, a construc­ tion that would promote the purpose or object underlying the Ordinance (whether that purpose or object is expressly stated in the Ordinance or not) shall be preferred to a construction that would not promote that purpose or object.

"(2) Nothing in sub-section (1) shall be construed as authorizing, in the in­
terpretation of a provision of an Ordinance, the consideration of any matter or
document not forming part of the Ordinance for any purpose for which that

4. Section 14 of the Principal Ordinance is amended

(a) by inserting "or to a remand centre" after "prison" in the definition of

"committed for trial"; and

(b) by inserting after the definition of "person" and "party" the following

definition:

" 'police officer' means a member or special member of the Aus­

tralian Federal Police;".

Schedule

5. The Schedule to the Principal Ordinance is amended—

(a) by inserting—

"Republic of Kiribati"

after—

"Republic of Kenya":

(b) by inserting—

"Saint Lucia

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines"

after—

"Papua New Guinea";

(c) by inserting—

"Republic of Vanuatu"

after—

"United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland":

and

(d) by adding at the end thereof—

"Republic of Zimbabwe".
