AN ORDINANCE

To amend the Interpretation Ordinance 1967-1972.

I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL of Australia, acting with the advice of the Executive Council, hereby make the following Ordinance under

the Seat of Government (Administration) Act 1910-1972.

INTERPRETATION ORDINANCE 1973

1. (1) This Ordinance may be cited as the Interpretation Ordin­

ance 1973.*

(2) The Interpretation Ordinance 1967-1972,t as amended by this Ordinance, may be cited as the Interpretation

Ordinance 1967-1973.

2 . Section 14 of the Interpretation Ordinance 1967-1972 is

amended—

(a) by omitting the definition of "Aus t ra l i a" and substituting

the following definition:—

" ' Australia ' or ' the Commonwealth ' means the Com­ monwealth of Australia and, when used in a geographical sense, does not include an external Territory;";

(b) by inserting after the definition of "Court of summary

jurisdiction " the following definition:—

" ' external Territory ' means a Territory, not being an internal Territory, for the government of which as a Territory provision is made by any Act;";

(c)

by inserting after the definition of " indictment" the fol­ lowing definition:—

" ' internal Territory' means the Australian Capital Territory, the Jervis Bay Territory or the Northern Territory of Australia;";

(d) by inserting after the definition of " statutory declaration " the following definition:—

" ' Territory ' or ' Territory of Australia ' means a Terri­ tory referred to in section 122 of the Constitution, and includes a Territory administered by Australia under a Trusteeship Agreement;";

(e) by omitting the definition of " the Commonwealth "; and

(f)

by omitting the definition of " the Gazette " and substituting the following definition:—

" ' t h e Gazette'' means the Commonwealth of Australia

Gazette published before the date of commence­ ment of sub-section (2) of section 4 of the Acts Interpretation Act 1973 or the Australian Govern­ ment Gazette published on or after that date;".

3. The Interpretation Ordinance 1967-1972 is amended by insert­

ing after section 14 the following section:—

" 14A. For the purposes of an Ordinance in which reference is made to a paper or document purporting to be printed by the Government Printer, the words ' Government Printer of Australia ' appearing on a paper or document shall be deemed to refer to the Government Printer.".
