An Act to amend the Greater Newcastle Act, 1937, in relation to the membership and chairmanship of committees of Newcastle City Council. [Assented to, 6th June, 1984.]

Greater Newcastle (Amendment).
BE it enacted by the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly of New South Wales in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
Short title.
This Act may be cited as the "Greater Newcastle (Amendment) Act,
1984".
Commencement.
(1) Sections 1 and 2 shall commence on the date of assent to this Act. (2) Except as provided by subsection ( 1 ) , this Act shall commence on such day as may be appointed by the Governor in respect thereof and as may be notified by proclamation published in the Gazette.

Amendment of Act No. 20, 1937.
The Greater Newcastle Act, 1937, is amended by omitting section
40 and by inserting instead the following section:—
Membership and chairmanship of committees.
40. (1) In this section—
"committee" means a committee appointed under section 37: "Council" means the Council of the City of Newcastle (formerly
known as the City of Greater Newcastle).
(2) The Lord Mayor of Newcastle shall, by virtue of holding the office of Lord Mayor, be a member of every committee of the Council.
(3) The Council may appoint a chairman of a committee of the
Council.

(4) Where the Council does not appoint a chairman of a committee of the Council, the committee shall appoint a chairman of the committee.
(5) Subject to subsection (6), the chairman of a committee of the Council, or in the absence of the chairman a member of the committee appointed by the committee, shall preside at a meeting of the committee.
(6) The Lord Mayor of Newcastle may preside at a meeting of
a committee of the Council.
