Citation

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (Prohibition of Drilling for Petroleum) Regulations.*1* SEE NOTES TO FIRST ARTICLE OF THIS CHAPTER .

Commencement

2. These Regulations shall come into operation on 1 September 1983.

REGULATIONS - REG 3
Interpretation

3. (1) In these Regulations, unless the contrary intention appears:
"drill for petroleum" means:
(a) drill to find petroleum; or
(b) drill to recover petroleum;
"petroleum" means:
(a) any naturally occurring hydrocarbon, whether in a gaseous, liquid or solid state;
(b) any naturally occurring mixture of hydrocarbons, whether in a gaseous, liquid or solid state; or
(c) any naturally occurring mixture of one or more hydrocarbons, whether in a gaseous, liquid or solid state, and one or more of the following, that is to say, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen, helium and carbon dioxide.

Oil drilling prohibited

4. (1) A person shall not drill for petroleum in any part of the Great Barrier Reef Region that does not for the time being form part of the Marine Park.


(2) A person who contravenes this regulation is guilty of an offence punishable, on conviction, by a fine not exceeding $1,000 for each day during which the offence continues.
