Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (Prohibition of Drilling for Petroleum) Regulations2 (Amendment)

I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL of the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975.

Principal Regulations

1. In these Regulations, “Principal Regulations” means the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (Prohibition of Drilling for Petroleum) Regulations.

Interpretation

2. Regulation 3 of the Principal Regulations is amended—

(a) by omitting from sub-regulation (1) the definitions of “reef”, “reef edge”, “the 5 kilometre line” and “the 500 metre line”; and

(b) by omitting sub-regulation (2).

3. Regulation 4 of the Principal Regulations is repealed and the following regulation substituted:

“4. (1) A person shall not drill for petroleum in any part of the Great Barrier Reef Region that does not for the time being form part of the Marine Park.

“(2) A person who contravenes this regulation is guilty of an offence punishable, on conviction, by a fine not exceeding $1,000 for each day during which the offence continues.”.

Schedules

4. The Schedules to the Principal Regulations are repealed.
